We wanted to put together an all-encompassing thread to address many of our most frequent questions around international travel and calling. Many of our customers travel into Mexico and Canada, as well as all over the world, so we wanted to give you all the information you'll need in one place.
In the discussion below, we'll go over all the important information if you are traveling in North America or beyond. We also have a great guide that will help walk you through choosing the best option that fits your needs.
We recently launched an amazing new International option for our customers called International Day Pass! Now staying connected while abroad is simpler than ever. Add to each device once and it’s available whenever you travel in included international countries. Take your talk, text, and data plan to over 100 countries for a low daily fee of $10 per month. Pay the daily fee only for the days you use abroad!
The Roam North America feature is the best option our customers have when traveling in North America, and it helps take the stress out of your travel. If qualified, you'll receive all the great benefits of unlimited talk, text, and data within and between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.! Please note that this feature is only available for customers who are on an AT&T Unlimited plan. If you already have our Unlimited Choice or Plus plan, you will have Roam North America already included. For customers on any of our other unlimited plans, you can choose to add on Roam North America as a feature.
AT&T Passport is also one of our most popular options and can be added on to most plans. We currently offer three packages: Passport, Passport Silver, and Passport Gold. Each Passport package includes a reduced rate for calls, unlimited messaging (text, picture, and video), and a bucket of data.
Here’s a summary of those three packages and the rates at this time:
Passport -- $40 charge and includes $1 per minute talk, unlimited text, and 200MB of data
Passport Silver -- $60 charge and includes $0.50 per minute talk, unlimited text, and 300MB of data
Passport Gold -- $120 charge and includes $0.35 per minute talk, unlimited text, and 800MB of data
To find the best package, I highly recommend taking a look at our Passport Data Calculator; it’s a great way to estimate how much data you’ll use during your trip and find one that’ll fit your needs!
Also, before adding on a Passport package, we recommend checking the AT&T Travel Guide to make sure your phone will work in the country you are visiting. It’s also a great tool if you’re traveling abroad in general!
Wi-Fi Calling is a low cost, but limited option when traveling as well. There’s a wide array of devices that can support Wi-Fi Calling, so it's important to ensure your device is capable beforehand. To see if your device has this feature, I recommend taking a look at our Device Support page, selecting your phone, and checking under the Calling topic. Or, you can also take a look at our forum thread where we update the list of Wi-Fi capable devices regularly, and be part of the discussion. Please note, there are some restrictions to Wi-Fi calling, so please visit our site to get all the details.
Last, but not least, are our pay-per-use rates. These apply if you don't have an international discount package, are in a country that isn't included in a package, or when a package expires.
As of right now, pay-per-use rates for Canada and Mexico are:
Talk: $1 per minute
Messages sent: $0.50 per text and $1.30 per picture & video. Domestic messaging rates apply to messages received.
Cellular Data: $2.05/MB
For Prepaid GoPhone accounts, we currently have one plan that includes roaming in Canada and Mexico, and it is the $60 monthly plan. You can find all the details on our International GoPhone support page! You'll find great information on Long Distance, and Roaming, so you can plan accordingly. If you have a different prepaid plan, you have the option to change to the $60 plan or take advantage of our GoPhone pay-per-use rates.
