NEXT should allow upgrades after 6 months!!!!
AT&T should allow customers on NEXT to upgrade 6 months into their plans. Why? Because TMobile and Verizon customers who have the equivalent of NEXT can upgrade 6 months into their installment plans. AT&T: don't fall behind. The pace of technology is faster than ever and TMobile and Verizon are better tuned with time than you! I'm at the point of switching to TMobile or Verizon because of their tech & customer friendly business model.

it sounds good in practice but as some people who are trying to upgrade at 6 months on those carriers. One scratch on back of the phone can cost you 100 bucks. They expect the phone at 6 months to look like its brand new

You can actually upgrade at any time, just pay the difference between where you currently are in the installment, and the amount of installments it takes to upgrade.
IE. If you are six months into next 18, pay the 10 months and you can go in to a store, trade in, and upgrade.

@as @oOObubblesOOo has pointed out, the AT&T plan seems to be slightly better than what Verizon is offering you. With the AT&T NEXT arrangements, you can upgrade any time after you have completed 2 payment cycles (not 6), but you do have to pay some additional payments in order to do this. I believe they are calling it "Pay to Upgrade" and it means that any time after you have completed 2 payment cycles on an arrangement, you can "pay the difference" and upgrade right away, or you could pay the full balance and keep the original phone and get a new one. This would mean that if you were on a NEXT 12 agreement and you had paid 3 payments, you could pay 9 payments all at once and upgrade immediately, or you could pay the remaining 15 payments all at once and keep the phone and still start a new agreement. If the other carriers are really reducing the trade in value excessively at 6 months for monit wear (scratches on teh back, etc.) then the AT&T arrangement sounds like it might be a much better deal, but only you can determine that. Just make sure that you have decent coverage and you understand the charges you will have with a new carrier should you decide to switch. It may "seem" better until you see all their fine print and charges...
