Re: Hello World: International Calls - Knowledge Sharing Session

OK I will get the ball rolling.

I travel internationally a fair amount.

My options are to use my AT&T sim card with one of the travel plans. AT&T passport is $40 per month and then the call rates are still high with very restricted data amounts.

Purchase a local sim card.

Put the phone in airplane mode and just use voip via wifi.

Use a product like knowroaming which many people use with great success.

There are many horror stories about folks getting back from a trip abroad to find huge and unexpected bills for data usage where their phones continued to sync to various services as they do at home where their data is “free”.

I think this has put a lot of people off using their home cell service while roaming unless they need their phones for business purposes, need to be contacts on the same number and their company is footing the bill.

So, what is one to do?

Which option makes the most sense for both the private and business traveler?

Re: Hello World: International Calls - Knowledge Sharing Session

@RhodesMan  Let me tell you what I saw this time in Iceland.
Yes,local Sim card are much much cheaper, some of them are target for tourist.
Like Vodafone in Iceland, they got a 15GB, unlimited local call and SMS for ISK2900 for 30 days

That is about US$29 for 30days.You get your Sim card FREE on the discount coupon book for tourist.
I just need to top up on their website ,got an unlocked phone, put in the APN and it works great.

@RhodesMan,

Thank you for your question and thank you for the additional info, @adidaskid808!

The Passport $40,$60 and $120 are great for trips lasting close to a month. For trips 2 weeks and shorter we would recommend the day pass plan that gives you access to your local plan.

Based on your domestic rate plan, you may be able to use International Day Pass - $10/day to use your domestic plan internationally. The convenience of using your device while abroad is a benefit for both you and the folks you call/text while traveling. An alternate SIM means you must inform all of your contacts of your new contact number; Wi-fi calling while out of the country does not bill for calls back to the US Based on your communication needs, using your own device may be the best option when traveling abroad.
