Call Protect activation contradiction

I got free version of "Call Protect" app, proceeded to activate by
entering my device's phone number, which got an automated temporary PIN.
BUT, I had to exit that panel to retrieve the text/SMS with that PIN. Back
to the app, I got to start all over again. and again. and again.

My phone does NOT let me switch apps the way my Windows PC does.

Is there any way to activate from AT&T web site?

Huh.  My phone entered it automatically from the text

Your phone must be smarter than mine -- a Doro 8040 with Android 7.0.

sent SMS to my phone and DID install.
Why does not AT&T version do similar?

Your Doro is not VoLTE compatible and not eligible for Call Protect.  

  To use call Protect you need a Voice over a LTE phone.   With very few exceptions that means an AT&T branded android or an iPhone model 6 or newer made for the USA.
