what kind of phone is needed to connect to the AT&T Uverse Gateway when upgrading from a landline
I connected my phone using the gray data cable into the phones lines 1 and 2 jack on the Uverse modem.
The phone says base - no line.
Do I need to purchase a Uverse compatible phone?

remove the DSL phone/data splitter from the wall phone jack - degrades
signal quality if you don't plug the green data cable directly into the
wall with no intermediate connections.
And you need your Wi-Fi connection to be within 20 feet of the modem -
outside of 20 feet the speed starts to degrade on Wi-Fi.

Do the modems lights indicate service? It takes no special phone to plug into the phone jack of the modem.

What happens when you call the phone number you were assigned?

They said a traditional landline phone should work just fine when connected to the proper port on the uverse modem.
If it's not the phone and if i'm using the proper jack on the uverse modem with the gray cable that was provided (also tried using the original phone cable into the proper jack and the old DSL jack and directly into the phone jack - same result - base - no line)
then I guess whatever phone line is needed to make a uverse modem connection has to be provided by the technician.
Old: Landline + DSL
New: uverse (Phone and Internet)
Just wondering if I needed to purchase a new Handset.

Again what happens when you dial the number you were assigned for the u-verse phone service? Line 1 is all you should need. Doesn't sound like your phone service is activated.

from the point of view of the telephone there is no active phone line.
The landline has been active for at least 14 years.
For whatever reason, you cannot keep your landline and just use AT&T
internet (uverse) instead of DSL.
If you use the Internet - you have to bundle phone.
At which point - they kill your landline - leaving you phoneless.
Which forces you to purchase a mobile phone while waiting for the
technician.

All that should be needed is for them to active your phone service, not sure why that should take a tech visit. Unless you specified when you requested the U-verse service that you wanted to keep you phone number you probably won't. You need to call customer service where you placed the order to get this straightened out.

the landline is with AT&T.
They have to de-link the existing number - and then reassign the number
back to you which takes time.
The phone jack on the uverse modem only needs a splitter if you want to
use the two line feature.
For a single phone - you just plug it in - and if the line is active -
it works.
