Leased phone

I just discovered that my elderly Mother is still paying for a leased phone, from 40 years ago.  She has now paid over $5000 for a PHONE.  I think this is absolutely terrible business practices, but how do we get the Lease termed as paid in full?  I'm wondering how many other elderly folks are paying this ridiculous charge for a leased phone.
