Just before you leave the USA, change your plan to one of the pay per use options ($2 or 25¢] and refill with $100 all at once. A$100 refill does not expire for 365 days and you won’t be in the USA to use it, so it sits there. This holds the account for 365 days and the $100 can be used for monthly service when you return.
