Sudden data spike

I have been an AT&T customer for six years and have in that time never got close to using more than 1.5 GB in a month. Recently my data usage spiked. I initially had an iPhone 6 and struggled with it there. The issue was that the safari app would go through an average of 10 MB per minute doing things like searching google for an answer to this problem. After doing everything up to and including a full erase I was finally convinced to by a new phone. I decided to switch to a Samsung galaxy but the problem still persists. I would go through my entire data plan in two hours or less if I let it. I don't know what to do since it clearly is not the phone.

Hey @DesertDragon,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community Forums! I can definitely shed some light on this topic for you!

In your Settings you can see which apps are consuming the most data. From there you can “Restrict Background Data” on these apps so they do not continue to run in the background with the app closed. We have a helpful Device Support Page which shares step-by-step directions on where to go to find this. Once you have your phone selected, you will see the option for View and Manage Data.

Also, you can establish a data limit to make sure you don’t go over your data allotment. To do so please complete these steps:
- Navigate to the Android settings menu.
- Tap "Data Usage."
- Select the dates next to "Data usage cycle," and Change cycle.
- Change the cycle date to match the start date of your monthly plan. This can be found on your monthly phone bill.
- Check the “Set Mobile Data Limit” box (or Limit mobile data usage on some phones) if you want the phone to block you from using any mobile data after you exceed your limit.
Once you’ve enabled this option, a red bar will appear on the graph.
- Tap the red bar and hit the up and down arrows to set the limit meter to match your data plan. Once you hit this level, your phone will turn your cellular data off and you’ll be limited to Wi-Fi unless your re-enable your cellular collection.

I hope this helps narrow down which app may be using the most data! If you have any additional questions, feel free to reach out to us!

Do a speed test to get a baseline of things if you haven't already.
