setting up my 3rd party router with 3801hgv

it was an offsite tutorial and everything u posted below is a foreign language to me not that computer savvy when it comes to this kinda stuff all im looking for is a straight forward step by step tutorial on how to use my linksys router for wifi instead of the built in one on the modem,i thought i had everything right because it was allowing me to connect to linksys but it had a limited connection notification preventing me from using the internet

The steps aviewer provided is about the best your going to get.  If you don't understand what he is telling you to do, it my be best to hire someone to do it for you.  You will have to have some "computer savvy"  to accomplish what your trying to do.

It would be like a main bearing going out in my engine and requesting a mechanic to give me step by step instructions on how to change it.  Their are so many different verabiles it's not going to happen.

With that said, maybe try linksys and see if they can walk you thru it free of charge?

Setting up IP Passthrough with 3rd Party Router

Connect a computer into one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the NVG510 using an Ethernet cable. Use another Ethernet cable to connect the WAN port of the 3rd party router to another of the Ethernet ports of the NVG510.

1. Open your browser and browse to 192.168.1.254

2. Under the Device section next to status click on "Device List"

3. Your IP Address/Name of your Computer and 3rd party router should show up in this list as the only two connected devices.

4. If you are not able to find out which device is which you may run the "ipconfig" command in windows by

• Clicking Start, then Run, and enter "cmd", and click OK
• or "Windows key + R" then type CMD and click OK
• In the DOS-like window that appears, type "ipconfig” and press Enter. The ip address will not be the "Default Gateway" but will be in the same format and match one of the IPs in the "Device List" of the modem.

• On an Apple OSX computer you will want to go to /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility
• In the drop down make sure "Network Interface (en0)" is selected
• In the "Interface Information" the IP  address will be next to "IP Address(es)"

5. Write down or copy the IP address and Mac Address from the Device list that isn't your computer and then Click on "Firewall" at the top

6. Below "Firewall" click on "IP Passthrough"

7. Under the IP Passthrough section fill in the following

•     Allocation Mode: Passthrough
•     Passthrough Mode: DHCPS-Fixed
•     Passthrough Fixed MAC Address: (Mac address of the device from the Device List)

8. Click "Save" at the bottom and power cycle the NVG510 and the 3rd party router.

9. Unplug computer from NVG510 and connected to your router and wait for both to come back up.

10. Once both the NVG and router are up open a browser and verify you are able to browse.

cant do it the way u provided i only have one ethernet port available on my modem i guess ill have to look elsewhere or continue to use this crap wifi im being told how to do this as if im a technician idk anything about how to turn off dhcp or "link" lan ports and wan ports (whatever that is)

See if they can assist?  I'm not sure how far they will be able to go with you until you hit the technical road block.  I don't mean that in a condescending way, but just sayin....

ok after looking thru this some i almost got it just got a quick question

im on step 3 now where you change your lan ip address so does this mean i need to change the local ip address (ip address to get to my linksys router page) to 192.168.1.10 or i also have something that says a starting ip address that i can change under setup

sorry to post again but i think i did it i just wanna verify heres what i did

after doing that i can now connect to wifi on this laptop thru linksys my next question is does this mean it is set up already for my other pcs that use wifi aswell or do i need to do something else for it to work on them,and do i need to disable wireless on my modem or do i need to keep it enabled

thanks for the help off to go do that pesky port forwarding now idk why xbox one and xbox 360 cant work together
