NVG589 gateway and Remote Desktop

I recently received from a tech a Motorola NVG589 residential gateway for my Uverse bonded copper service.  Previous to that, I don't recall the unit but I had Windows RDP working without issue for all of the windows based PCs in my household.

I got the NVG589 manual and performed all of the steps to open up 3389, including at Firewall;NAT/gaming I added a 3389 TCP/UDP service and assigned the target to my windows 8 computer, as well setting up IP passthru and default server, but nothing works. Using http://www.canyouseeme.org/, I can see that 3389 never gets opened up.  Hoping for suggestions before I request the tech to get me my old gateway model back.

thanks

Hey notoriouslrg,

I came across your post while looking for more robust information on the NVG589 Motorola Gateway. I also had the same problem and after some discovery, I determined that you must set the "public subnet" to allow "inbound traffic". This is critical because any changes you might make regarding port assignments and inbound routing are not going to work unless you set this first.

While in the Gateway interface, go to the "Home Network " tab and select "Subnets and DHCP". Locate the "Public Subnet " section and set the "Allow Inbound Traffic " drop-down to"On". This will now allow inbound requests. I'm pretty sure that is your problem.

Obviously after this, you should review Firewall settings on both the Gateway as well as the device (system) your routing to.

Interestingly enough, I found that port 3389 did not require any additional "NAT/Gaming" or "IP Passthrough" settings as it seems to be open by default. Obviously, this is where having good documentation is important. Subsequently, it would be wise to run a port scanner to really determine what is open and what is closed, because the Gateway interface doesn't really give you the full story.

Hope this helps!

Contact ATT Uverse Care here:
https://forums.att.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage/tab/compose/note-to-user-id/2365485

Send them a private message, on this link, and they should be able to give the help needed to solve your Uverse service problems. They are available M-F 8am-11pm Eastern time, response may take up to 2 business days.

This is not the regular CS/TS people, but the social media Community Specialists that know the people to contact to get things done. I personally know as they've helped me on a DVR swap.

Include your account#, email address and a good phone # (land or cell) and time to contact you on.

Check for the blue PM envelope to appear, upper right on every page, for their reply. Good luck 😉

Thank you so much Chris.  I tried submitting the question via the link, using IE 11, IE 11 compatibility, and Chrome, and on all three the send button is enabled but it does not trigger anything- it does not send it.  There seems to be no url behind the button.

I wonder if that is AT&T's method of throttling down the questions 🙂

Do you know if I contact CS, will they provide assistance for such an esoteric issue?

Ocassionally the PM tool seems to have a disabled "send" button.  I'd blame it on script/ad blockers, but it happens on systems not equipped with them as well.

Normally if one tries again after a few hours, it miraculously works.

What type of service do you have?
Were you assigned any IP addresses?

Let me know,

uverse 18 meg with u450, no it's all dynamic , no static ip.

remote desktop connection inside the LAN.

like instead of me walk to the computer in the garage, I always remote desktop from my computer in the living room or anywhere in the house to the computer in the garage.

after i swap out the RG 3801 to NVG589, I can't anymore.

I also use "SplashTop" on the ipad and they are fine.

Any advise?
