Faster Speeds Available in My Area?

I was considering getting U-Verse Internet service, but only the Basic (756 kbps) and Express (1.5 mbps) packages are available in my area.  Same goes for the DSL high speed Internet.  I would greatly appreciate if faster speeds were available to me (preferably Express (6 mbps) or better), as the residents of my household rely on the Internet for entertainment (online gaming, etc) and other matters.  Is the only way to obtain faster speeds just to wait and it may happen eventually, or would there be some way I could request faster speeds or something of the sort?  And if all I can do is wait, is there some way I could ensure that it will happen in the future?
