Sporadic connection and high ping

Hello!

I've been having a problem with my ATT U-verse internet, and I thought I'd ask here first.

I sporadically lose connection to World of Warcraft servers. When it happens my lag jumps through the roof (5-10 seconds) and I often get disconnected from the shard. This seems to only affect WoW, my connection to other services like games or web-sites appears unaffected. The WoW problem happens both in the PM and AM.

I tried doing the simplest thing to trouble shoot, and restarted the modem. And it helped at first. I had no disconnects for almost a week, but now the problem is back. So now I'd like to see if there is a deeper problem here, and if anything else can be done (besiders restarting the modem every so often)

Also, I am not sure if this is relevant, but event log at http://192.168.1.254 looks like this:

INF 2016-07-25T19:17:58-05:00 acs connreq: all done, close connection...

and it keeps repating. Is there anything I can do before having to call ATT's support?

Thanks!

Hi @Redteamblueteam,

Based on the troubleshooting you have already performed, everything is working fine with the exception of WOW. In the past, distance of servers, time of day and traffic on the servers was the culprit. Settings on the modem may need to be updated for WOW game play. We recommend checking WOW's website to see what ports need to be opened. This may resolve the issue. In the past, placing the modem in DMZ for the port being used has resolved some issues like this.

Good luck,

@Redteamblueteam, the log entries you see are just connects and disconnects of client devices, likely because they either go out of range (like cell phones) or are turned off or go to sleep (like laptops or tablets).  If you can identify a node that is disconnecting when it is powered on and should be in range, then more troubleshooting may be in order.

Are you playing WoW over a wireless connection?  Can you switch to a wired one?

Opening the ports was the first thing I did. It didn't help. I also experienced disconnects on several servers (low pop, high pop) during different times.

I'll try to set up a wired connection and see how it goes. Just need a 50ft cable -_-

One weird thing I've observed is that switching from 5Ghz to the other frequency makes disconnects significantly less frequent... but that just might be shamanism. Or it might be that my wireless adapter is faulty. That would explain why my PC (one of those nodes is my PC, duh, thanks for pointing it out) disconnects all the time. I'll try to swing by Bestbuy some time this week.

Thanks for the help fellas, I hope I can figure it out.

You say you need a 50' cable to go wired: what is the direct distance between the Gateway and the PC, and what sort of things are in between?

Keep in mind that 2.4 GHz has less bandwidth capacity but carries over longer distances and better penetrates walls.  5.0 GHz has more bandwidth capacity (more channel options that can be used simultaneously) but does not carry as far.  The actual distance either will carry depends on a lot of factors (how good the antennas are, how good the chipset is, how much power is being used, what is the RFI like, what are your walls made of).

Hi JefferMC,

The distance isn't that great, about 20 ft, with a single wall in-between. Laying the cable around all the obstacles neatly would probably be around 30-35 ft.

But besides that - I replaced my newer dual-mode Wi-Fi adapter with my old 2.4Ghz one, and the disconnects have stopped completely. So either the key was switching to a new frequency, which as you said has better penetration, or the newer apapter might have been faulty.

Either way, hopefully it was the source of the problem.

Suddenly, after a clean log since February, I'm suddenly seeing entries like these at various intervals, usually some hours apart, on my Pace 5268 (which has all Wi-Fi radios DISABLED):

INF 2017-06-24T07:09:05-07:00 acs connreq: all done, close connection...
INF 2017-06-24T04:22:10-07:00 acs connreq: all done, close connection...
INF 2017-06-24T01:34:00-07:00 acs connreq: all done, close connection...
INF 2017-06-23T23:15:02-07:00 acs CWMD fault: 9005 get params
INF 2017-06-23T22:49:07-07:00 acs connreq: all done, close connection...

That CWMD fault: 9005 get params may be an outlier, I don't recall seeing that one before (though I'd still like to know what it means). But the

connreq: all done, close connection

messages are piling up, and I never saw them before perhaps four days ago.

Thing is, the Wi-Fi radios on the modem are all disabled -- turned off. So there can't be any Wi-Fi connection requests!

The only wired connection goes straight to an Edgerouter which NATs in the static IPs cascaded from the modem. So what could the sudden appearance of these connection request messages be?

This is a replacement modem of the same type, changed out when the first one would sporadically experience extremely high packet loss rates. The replacement modem has done the same thing as well, but so far significantly less often. Techs have been out to check all the usual possibilities here and at the DSLAM, and can't find anything amiss. With both modems, I routinely see significant numbers of corrected errors on one line, and no errors on the other, e.g. right now it's around 7800 soft errors over an 11:38 hour collection period for that first line. It can go to higher soft error rates but apparently stays within "official" limits. I virtually never see hard (uncorrected errors).

My attention was drawn to the logs -- and those "connection" messages, when I started to suspect recently that the modem has rebooted itself several times (it's on a good UPS). Routinely I'd collect a month or more of stats and then reset, but lately I've found the stats reset themselves (e.g., saying they've only been collecting for 24 hours when I did not manually reset them, suggesting that the modem rebooted itself.

Any insight into any of these issues above would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
