AT&T Slow Wi-Fi - Fixes & Things to Know

Learn how to improve your Wi-FI speeds and why your internet is not working like you think it should

First, let's try some fast fixes to speed up your Wi-Fi.

Restart the modem Clear up the modem environment Turn off devices not in use
This clears up the backend process that may be slowing your service down. Electronics emit interference. Too many electronics can affect Wi-Fi performance.  Some devices may be pulling internet resources. Turning them off may stabilize speeds

If the above does not work, we have more tips and information to help you understand why services may not be working as they should.

Optimize your settings

Just like your TV, the modem has different channels. One channel has the sports you like and another may have a favorite show. Others have nothing you want to watch or find useful. The Wi-Fi channels are the same, some work better than others. Some can help improve Wi-Fi coverage and speeds. Updating the Wi-Fi Channel is easy:

  1. Sign in to Smart Home Manager
  2. Once signed in, scroll to the "Let's Scan for Better Wi-Fi"
  3. Select "Scan Now"

Smart Home Manager will find the best channel. If you want to manually sign in to the modem to test channels on your own, we have instructions just for you:

Helpful Hint: Each home is different so you may need to test a few channels.

Does your plan support all your devices?

We live in an age where everything is connected to the internet. If you have AT&T Fiber, you should not have any issues. If you have a low-tier plan like 100Mbps, 50Mbps, 25Mbps, or lower, depending on how many devices are connected can negatively impact your experience. In instances like this, you have 3 options:

  • Optimize your settings & improve the modem environment
  • Upgrade to a higher-tier plan
  • Prioritize which devices should be online

With the Smart Home Manager, you'll find your internet plan and the number of devices connected. Also, our Speed Calculator can help you determine if you have the right plan or if you are using more than your plan can support

Remember, each device shares a portion of your internet signal. If you have multiple users or devices on the internet at the same time, you may experience slow speeds, slow browsing, or downloading. Check out our Internet Plan & Number of Devices to learn more.

Heads Upupgrading can improve overall speeds if you use multiple devices.

Minimize Interference

If electronics, like speakers or sound systems, are near the modem, the interference those devices emit can affect your speeds and slow down speeds. The links below go over how you can improve the modem environment and the best spot for the modem.

Heads Up: It is normal for wireless speeds to drop in half. Run a wired speed test with only 1 device connected. If your wired speeds test within your plan range, you'll need to improve the environment or optimize your settings. Learn why now.

We just recently did away with Directv and installed Uverse.  Before the installation out internet service was decent.  Not bad, not great.  Now we are constantly having issues with WiFi. It goes in and out a lot.  I try to do a test daily and it usually reads between 5-30 mbps.   We pay for 45 mbps.  What could the problem be.  I do not want to pay for more when we can’t even get what we pay for to work.  Please help.

I just ran a test for today and it said “no internet connection” for about 15-20 minutes.

Hi @Wfayette,

I just moved your question to our Wi-Fi Troubleshooting article. It has information on what you can do to improve your experience. I would recommend removing all but 1 device, reset the modem, and test again. A restart has resolved most issues like this.

Switch your internet to something else. They can't help you here.

Yet again another worthless effort to help with the awful internet provided. I have refreshed the modem several times and there isn't a single sound system or speaker in the whole house. Even with all of this, I still receive constant slow speeds of 3-8 Mbps and a download speed slightly over 500 Kbps. (I have the supposed 50 Mbps plan) This service isn't worth a quarter of the over $65 charged each month. I find it funny how they show how fast things download. They have an example of being able to download 10 songs in 34 seconds. This is a lie as I can only download 1 song in over a minute. I have looked at other reviews and they have expressed the same disapproval for the internet speed. The internet cannot run 2 devices at the same time without serious lag. Even with 1 device, the internet is constantly under 10 Mbps. Overall complete dissatisfaction and if you are trying to decide who to buy your internet from, make sure it isn't AT&T!

You are so RIGHT. ATT is getting worse and worse. I guess hiring Union workers that do not work, is the answer. But they really need a kick in the (Edited per community guidelines), for the way they rip off families that need wi-fi for school students. But If we call them, they don't have answers. Nor will they come out to fix their rip off, either. They know that in this area, they have us by the balls and they care less if the children get a good strong internet to get decent grades. We have been considering switching to Hughes net or something like it to resolve this nightmare we have been living with the last 6 months. I hope you will be able to find a better internet provider. I know I will keep looking.

I was told I could get internet EXACTLY like my current service which is STARTING speed of 100mbps for less than I'm paying now. Which sounds great, I set up my appointment and 4 days later notice my speed is drastically low, I run a test and was at 45mbps so I log into my account to make sure I got the correct plan and I see something worse. I have a monthly limit on my home internet! I was not told there was a cap on home internet and immediately called to cancel but it was after hours so I called back the next morning only to be told I signed a contract and have a $180 early termination fee. I understand how you stay in business now with such expensive low quality products and services. You entice people with false information and still charge for it. I never had a problem with my services until now. Had I known there was a cap before setting up I would have never changed services. Next time you get offers from AT&T always ask 100 questions so you don't get taken advantage of. I've never written a bad review for anything before but I am so upset by this I felt I needed to share my experience so no one else has to be subjected to something similar.

Or switch to Verizon I have had the best high speed internet and great customer service plus they do not lie and take responsibility for their internet issues unlike At&t. At&t internet  will always  be slow as a turtle no matter how much you pay them they do not care about how good their service is as long as they can keep overcharging you for their crappy internet. Verizon may be expensive but been using it for several months now and love it I live in the country in a very small town and it still running super fast never had any issues with them ever and if I did they nice enough to help you and not try to bargain you with a higher over priced plan that is far worse. Just  a suggestion but trust me I been a at&t costumer for twelve years and wished i done this sooner instead of getting screwed over by them. We have two choices for good internet at&t or Verizon wish I choose Verizon long ago so far I loving their internet worth every dime and penny.

I have had nothing but problems with the Wi-Fi service. I upgraded my plan to the 1G package. Was told I needed a newer modem to handle it so you sent me one. And the service is actually worse now than before. I even got a Wi-Fi extender and that doesn’t help. I did the recommended 5ghz and 2.4ghz so devices weren’t all omg eh same channel. Nothing helps. The smart home manager says I have connection speeds of almos 1G but every other speed test I run to my devices I’m lucky to get 20mbps. I’m beyond frustrated and of course you can’t get ahold of anyone to help. I’ve waited on hold twice for over an hour each time and just gave up. I don’t think the modems you give with the packages are sufficient to send out strong enough signal.

Need. A little help here I’m ready to just cancel your service and try someone else it can’t possibly be any worse!!
