Physical Requirements for Faster U-Verse Speeds?

Hello.  I was excited when I learned faster U-Verse speeds were coming to subscribers.  45Mbps, then eventually 75Mbps, and possibly 100Mbps after that.  I did my research to find out what makes this possible, and it boils down to a couple of things.  One is "vectoring," which is essentially noise cancellation for the line, increasing the signal to noise ratio (and thus, bandwidth).  Another thing is pair bonding...which is...using more than one pair of wires.

Sadly, I live in an apartment complex, and there is only 1 pair per apartment.  So I doubt I'll be able to get the 75 or 100 Mbps speeds.  However, I don't understand why (logically) the advantages of vectoring can't be used for my single pair.  I asked a U-Verse Technician if I'd be able to get higher speeds soon, and he said I could not because I only have 1 pair.  I am not totally confident his answer is accurate however, and wanted to post here in the forum to inquire.

I happen to work for AT&T myself (none of my comments, words, etc., reflect those of the company, and are my personal views/opinions), and one of the things I do is add capacity to IPDSLAMS by ordering cards, and manage projects that install Lightspeed (U-Verse) equipment -- 7450's, 7330's, etc.  I might know enough to answer this question if I had gotten a job or two to upgrade the 7330's to the faster cards, but I haven't been issued any such job yet, so I don't know the answer.

I was hoping that perhaps one of you out there have been involved with this in Labs and know the definite answer, or perhaps there's someone here who also has only 1 pair and has gotten the 45Mbps speed.  Again, there are 2 ways of getting the higher speeds, and I know I can't use 1 of them (2 pairs), but I want to know if vectoring can be used on a single pair to bump my speeds.

I'm really hoping it's possible, 'cause I don't think the apartment complex will tear up the place to add more copper wiring! Smiley Wink

If anyone is interested in the question I posted -- I was told by someone who most definitely knows the answer to this, that even the 45 Mbps HSIA requires 2 pairs.  I was sad.

I think they announced the 45MB tier in Indianapolis about 4 months ago. I called a couple of times and they said it wasn't available where I live. Since then, some friends and coworkers in differetn areas have been updated and then last week, the guy accross the street came back to Uverse from Comcast with a new install and he got it. So I called again and after talking to 3 people and being on hold for a while, they finally said they didn't know why, it just wasn't available yet. I told them there is only one VSLAM for my neighborhood vut she said there wasn't server space.

I think the problem is process, after looking to the previous post, I probably need a new install to my house to get the new tier. Support needs a way to handle a request like mine.

I am 1500ft to the VSLAM and the first support guy thinks my 3801HGV can handle it. I have thought about dropping uver internet and installing Comcast but that seems like a hassle. I have also thought about dropping Uverse and then readd it but that would be mess up my DVR and my family's viewing habits. I expressed my frustration on a feedback survey so hopefully that will get something done.

The support guy who thinks your 3801 "can handle it" would be wrong.  The power tier requires:

  • a NVG 589 (the 2WIRE 3801 can't do it)
  • two available pair from the VRAD to your NID (including the one pair you already have)
  • a Cat5 cable from the NID to your RG with a total of two pair available for U-verse use (you may or may not be using a Cat5 cable now)
  • two available ports in the VRAD (including the one you already have)
  • a distance of not more than 2200' from the VRAD

So, you're okay on the last one.  You're not currently okay on the first one.  The other 3 may or may not be an issue for you at this time or your address may not have been updated properly in the database that engineering makes available to customer service.

Thanks for the info, now I need an upgrade process from Uverse. Years ago when I got Uverse, they ran Cat5 everywhere, the coaxil cable didn't work yet. To my RG, its Cat5 but it split, 2 to ethernet, 2 to the green broadband port. Looking at it now, it seems strange but I never gave it a thought, Uverse is usually rock solid. Plus its probably not cost effictive to just upgrade me but if it wasn't much, I would be ok burning some money. That would also keep the wife from spending it.

I would be happy to even get 12mb at this point, and you're sad about not might be able to get 75mbs, i been having u verse for 2 years and they have yet to give me any type of upgrades to faster speed, i run 3mb down and 0.48kbs up, which is pretty sad, 2 years i have had this internet and i cannot get any other internet company because of att. verison told me the whole story between them and its because of att that no other company can be in this area, and they wont give me faster speed, but i can literally walk down my street, LITERALLY and get 12mb net? how is that even possible? just because i live in a mobile home area? really dissatisfying

48/5, uverse is rock solid where I live. Since that post, the guy across the street came back to uverse and got it. The problem I think is uverse does not have a process to upgrade me without turning off services. I have called a number of times over the last few months and I am going in circles, put on hold till it disconnects. One tech sales guy said they could turn off service to upgrade but it will take 3-5 days of downtime.

Annoying but I will keep trying.

Have you tried PM'ing the U-verse customer care team at AT&T logoU-verse Customer Service link?

This is a group of U-verse service specialists who are knowledgeable about U-verse and will stay with your request until the end (instead of forgetting about it when the phone hits the cradle). Speed things up by including your Billing Account Number, and the best time and way to reach you.

No, but I am going to try it now, I have lost count on the number of times I have called and I am just going in circles.
