Check your AT&T internet speed

To Begin a Speed Test:

Prepare your network to get accurate results

  • Delete your browser’s Cache, Cookies, and Temporary Internet Files. To find out how please go here
  • Stop all downloads, streaming, applications, or programs that may be using your Internet connection
  • Use a wired connection directly between your device and the gateway, exclude third party routers for this test
  • Eliminate traffic being used by all devices connected to the gateway except for the device with the speed test in progress, disable WiFi if necessary
  • Reboot your Residential Gateway

Launch the AT&T recommended speed test site at att.com/speedtest

  • Enter your AT&T e-mail address to help us improve our service (optional)
  • Click the START TEST button checkInterspeed2.png
  • Allow 30-60 seconds for your test results
  • Review the Download and Upload speed then compare it to your subscribed speed
  • Rerun the test if needed by using the button in the test results section Checkinterspeed3.png

Speed test results still slow?

  • Go to our myAT&T app and let us test your service, if we find something we can begin resolving the issue
  • Reboot your residential gateway if you have not done so, regular use leads to low memory and pending processes for the gateway’s operating system as with most networking devices
  • Check the Ethernet cable for any defects and replace if necessary
  • Periodically clear your browser’s cache
  • Scan your PC or device for any Spyware, Virus, or other malicious programs and take action to remove them
  • Avoid running multiple firewalls, or disable firewall
  • Avoid using VPN connections and Internet Proxy servers

Understanding the results:

Why are my speed results good but streaming media, or gaming is slow?

  • A speed test will measure your download and upload speed but does not measure the quality or stability of your connection. To measure quality and stability it is recommended to do a ping type test to identify if any packet loss exists

What is Mbps or Kbps?

  • This is the unit of measure for your Internet speed
  • Mbps - Megabits Per Second
  • Kbps- Kilobits Per Second
  • 1000 Kilobits is 1 Megabit

Why do other speed test sites give me different results?

  • Speed test sites use different server locations, it is recommended to use the nearest server to you
  • While it is good practice to test your speed with alternate speed testing sites, please be aware the results may vary based on location.

 Thanks

Many factors affect the Internet service you purchased from AT&T and influence the actual Internet speed you experience at any given time.

One would think that with all the existing negative publicity and reaction to Adobe Flash and its' historic security vulnerabilities that AT&T would consider offering a speed test which does NOT include either Flash or Java.

Problem it is all publcity, not much real world info behind it and Adobe updates Flash regularly.  I'll go to ATT speedtest, speedtest.net and OK flash for each.

I've been offered a HTML5 video one place and it was awful, looked like poor SD and this same site offered very good Flash. 😉

I have followed all your prompts and instructions, reset the router. All software is updated and my Smart TV is hardwired so we do not have an issue with WIFI...

But as of yesterday (Dec.19) youtube performance is COMPLETELY throttled. I cannot see any videos without massive loading times, massive drops in quality, or all out stalls. I used to be able to run youtube without a problem as of two days ago, but now it is impossible to use the website on the smart tv in our office.

What happened? I have contacted LG, Mac... they say this is all my internet connection.

I've been watching the Connection speed on youtube over the past two days, and it rarely goes into the high teens (17000-20000kbps) anymore, and now hovers around sub200Kbps. It is impossible to watch anything like this. At all.

Mind you, video on youtube was working perfectly two days ago.

I use youtube in my office to stream ambient videos/sound for waiting room and meetings. PLease, any kind of help or advice as to how to fix this? My neighbor across the street who also have Uverse is reporting similar problems with his service. Can someone send a technician out here? We had rainstorms in SoCal recently, could that be the culprit? We spend a lot on ATT across the board, please help.

Hi @mobuli,

Sorry to read of the trouble you are having. In the last few days, was any new equipment added? Changes made to the environment of the modem?

To the right, you will see Internet Hot Topics - Improve Slow Speeds. You will find some articles that may help.

A week or two before the crippling slowdown (which has continued) we swapped out an old apple time capsule for a new one. But I've looked into this - it's working correctly, serving as a bridge from your router only, so it should not be slowing down the speeds. The firmware on the time capsule is updated.

AKA, the time capsule is not the reason for the crippling slow down - considering my neighbor across the street is having the same problems, I believe this to be a service issue.

Is ATT throttling YouTube?

Why do I continue to pay for internet service from this provider?! Ridiculous and continuous disconnect from the service!! Time to move to a new provider just as I did for cell service! Tired of AT&T
