NVG Changing the Wireless Channel

You may experience weak or dropped signals if say a cordless phone and Wi-Fi gateway share the same frequency channel or if two gateways sharing the same frequency channel are located relatively close to each other.

A potential fix for this issue is to change the channel, thereby reducing frequency interference. The steps below show how to check which channel you're currently on and which channels are available for you. Trial and error testing may be required to find the right channel for you.

  1. First you will need to gather some information in order to access and make changes to your router. You can locate the information needed on the Yellow sticker on the side of the modem. You will need the following info. Device Access Code and the IP address listed under For Advanced Device Configuration (should look like 192.168.1.254)

  2. Open a browser (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari) and in the address bar, type http://192.168.1.254

  3. You first want to click on Home Network and then click on Wireless on the next bar down.

  4. You now want to go down to the section listed as Channel and select the channel you wish to change it to. You may want to write down the current channel as well as any channel you change it to as you may need to change the channel a couple of times to find the best channel for your WiFi network. After selecting a channel from the list please ensure to hit Save at the bottom of the screen.

OPTIONAL – NVG589 model only

The NVG589 model comes with a built in Wireless Scan feature than can automatically detect the optimal channel.

  1. Go to the Wireless Scan tab

  2. This scan will help determine the best possible channel for your location. Next click on Continue. A suggested channel should now be displayed. Remember this channel or write it down and go to Step 3 in the previous steps.
