Can't stop the Spam on AT&T-Yahoo email

I have AT&T/Yahoo email and use Yahoo Classic. I'm getting about 30 emails a day in my spam box/folder and half of them are lewd or disgusting. And no, I don't go onto these types of websites. I've tried to block them but unfortunately they will have a different combinations of letters (not a name) on everyone of spam emails from the same site. I don't think my email stores these blocked sites anyhow and they come right back. And even though I might miss an email in the spam folder I went into "Spam Guard" and under "Empty Spam Folder" I selected "Immediately" and saved the setting. This didn't work either and they all still show up instead of being sent to the trash bin.

So when I click on any type of question mark in Yahoo Classic it immediately links me to the U-verse home page. It also prompted me the other day to contact AT&T, my provider, for any problems rather than contacting Yahoo. I remember before contacting AT&T/U-verse about other email problems and they said I need to contact ConnecTech which I know is a pay service. I'm not going that route.

I know with the "new" AT&T email they have some type of blocking system which may just flag a site and not let their emails be received anymore. But I don't want to switch back and forth all the time to do this. I'm also afraid I might lose the Classic email view if I do this and don't want to switch to the "new" email.

Does anybody have a solution for blocking unwanted spam w/AT&T Classic Yahoo email? I'd really appreciate any help but I'm not interested in completely changing email clients. Thanks!

Thanks for the help and support CJ!

Believe I'm starting to weed the low-life spammers out now that I'm starting to learn how to block them. Of course for everyone I block it seems like a new one shows up. I'll have to adjust the filtering some because I think the same ones are getting through.

As mentioned before every time I click on a question mark in Yahoo email it take me to the "AT&T Support Center". Then if I click on "HSI-Internet Support" I see how to "Troubleshoot Email Account" but there is not one support topic mentioning spam. Only when doing a search in support for blocking spam emails do I find the below topic. With spam emails being so rampant these days you would think there would be an obvious link to blocking/unblocking unwanted senders instead of having to search it out. (see below link for instructions).

http://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/email-support/KM1010547

Below are the instructions from the AT&T esupport link and if you follow these instructions "to the letter" you won't be blocking/unblocking any specific senders. They left the most important step out in clicking on "Save Changes" at the end which I'll add in as the last step and type in with red text.

How to block and un-block mail from a specific sender

Yahoo! Mail makes it easy to block unwanted messages from a known address. It's just as easy to remove the block if you want to.

Here's how to block an email address:

  1. Click Options in the upper-right corner of your Yahoo! Mail page and select Mail Options.
  2. Under Spam, click Block Addresses.
  3. Under Add Block, enter the email address from which you don't want to receive mail.
  4. Click Add Block.
  5. The address now appears on your list of blocked addresses.
  6. Click Save Changes in the top bar.

Yahoo! Mail offers up to 500 blocked email addresses. You can see how many of your blocked addresses you're using beside the list - i.e., 4 of 500 used.

You can also un-block addresses whenever you want.

To remove a block from an address:

  1. From the Blocked Addresses list, click the address you wish to remove.
  2. Click Remove Block beside your Blocked Addresses list.
  3. Click Save Changes in the top bar.

Believe when I followed the above AT&T instructions, which don't mention clicking on "Save Changes", is why I couldn't block any of the unwanted senders. Their names/domains disappeared from the "Blocked Addresses list" on exiting. I also just went into the "Blocked Addresses List", removed the block from a specific sender, their name/domain was completely removed, and exited w/o clicking on "Saving Changes". I went right back into the list and the specific sender was still on the list so after removing the sender you have to click on "Save Changes" to unblock the sender.

I'm not sure if any AT&T staff member is following this thread, or reading this post, but someone should let AT&T esupport know to add this last step to the above instructions. Thanks.

Hey Uni, there's a couple different ways you can do this. On the "Spam" settings page under "Blocked Email Addresses" it appears it will accept domains only, so if your getting messages from randomname@spammers.com , you should be able to just enter spammers.com in the blocked addresses list. If that does not work you can use the "Filters" setting page to create a more refined filter and send the messages to the trash folder instead of the spam folder.

I too have noticed an increase in the amount of spam I have been getting in the Spam folder.  I also use classic mail but only to check my inbox prior to opening my outlook to make sure I don't download any emails with some virus attached.  I do check my spam folder at the same time to see if it cought an email that was marked as spam but shouldn't.

I have been getting mostly spam that says you have an important message from facebook admin, USPS tracking number to track your package, and all kinds of spam from different emails for viagra or other types of drugs.  The norm I would see was 2 or 3 a day and now I see 15 to 20 a day.  Who knows what's going on!!

Thanks for the info CJ. One thing I found I was doing wrong is after going to "Spam" I entered either the full sender name and/or domain in "Blocked Email Addresses" is I wasn't hitting "Save Changes" at the top so they were not saved. So last night I entered about a dozen of them, hit save changes, they're still there, and believe they are being blocked. Mostly all I entered were only the specific domains but it also seemed to accept a full name w/domain.

I've never created a filter, just tried one, but not sure if I'm doing it right? Named it "Pharmacy to Trash", sender "begins with" Pharmacy, checked "Match" box, move to "Trash" folder, Save Changes. It sure seems confusing because where I entered "Pharmacy" in the middle box the prompt says "Enter a value for sender match" which seems more like they're asking for a number (value?) instead of a name. Does it seem like I did this correctly?

Have done a whole lot of searching for info on blocking unwanted spam emails with AT&T/Yahoo email and all of it is really confusing. One piece of info was to open the email to get the full address but there is no way I'm going to do that. If I just hold the curser under the sender it will show me what the name w/domain is. Then I read where you should block all "HTML" images because if you open an email w/one the sender knows you opened it and bombard you with more. Not quite sure how to block these images but I checked the box in "Spam" where it says to only receive images from those on your contact list.

One of the things I find really irritating is most the pharmacy spam emails are using Yahoo email to harass Yahoo email customers. This includes "Canadian Pharmacy" & "Express Pharmacy" and I kind of hate to put a block on "yahoo.com" altogether. If I knew of a way to complain about this I would. Also "Pharmacy" uses the domain "microsoft.msn.com" which maybe I should put a block on the domain altogether since the sender has a different set of letters before the domain every time.

The email spam and harassing spam phone calls on Voice are almost enough to make me want to cutoff all my services to the outside world. I hate government intervention but they sure have ignored this problem. And you can throw the HIPPA rules I'm trained on out the window as far as releasing any private medical info for privacy. My wife is a diabetic and every since her 1st prescription was filled a couple years ago we've got nothing but harassing phone calls which are almost worst than the disease itself. I'm battling one right now which is named "Appointment" or "Appointment Status" on CID where phone users think it's a doc office, they want to offer a free glucose monitor, but in fact they're phishing for personal info to steal. What a scam and they have the meanest/rude reps in the world!

Sorry for going OT and venting but this spam is driving us nuts!

Thanks for the info BB and figured I wasn't the only one out there which has seen a huge increase in spam emails.

I think you'll be fine Uni, in this instance the value can be a number or text or a combination of both.

This only works AFTER you recieve the SPAM! The the spammers just change their domain or user name and contine send mail.

This needs to be filtered at the server level!

Yahoo is not doing this hasn't been trying to protect their users for years. I do not want or use ANY Yahoo branded services, but they still creep into my AT&T account.

one Here is a little secret ATT is the one creating the spam. They have a program that creates the publicity on all the spam we are receiving.

if you move the cursor slowly over the senders name you will see that the email address looks something like this:

at&tappsbeta@att.sbc.bellsouth.juni.in

the system sends up to 50 emails every 3 hours.

The solution is to pay attention to that email address and block it. Since I did my spam whent away, well almost but i got rid of 99% of it.

That's like saying that anyone whose first name is "Martin" is from Germany based on knowing that Martin Luther was German.

I'm glad you got rid of your spam by blocking that e-mail address.  However, that e-mail address isn't even the address of an AT&T customer, nor AT&T.  The '.IN" on the end indicates India.  So, assuming it's an address at all, it would be server "att.sbc.bellsouth" on the "juni" network in India.

I really doubt if AT&T or Yahoo is creating all the lewd spam I receive, and no I don't visit those sites!

Agree on being able to see the URL/address if holding the curser near the sender but this only works with the old "Basic" att/yahoo email and not the new and improved version, which it's not, "Full Feature" att/yahoo email. Just another feature which was removed in the newer version email which makes it more difficult to use.

Maybe you'd like to explain how to copy the spam address you can see in the basic email version and then paste it in the blocked message slot? I've never been able to do this since right clicking on the mouse doesn't give you a copy option when seeing the spam address and as soon as you move the curser away from the address it disappears. I used to write them down and then type the address in the block message slot but there's too many of them now. Also agree with TSMC; as soon as you have the address blocked they just change the address or mainly the domain. I've never seen "att" listed in the address but plenty with "yahoo" listed.

I will say I'm glad to see the ads AT&T/Yahoo installs at the top of my email inbox list slot only stays on for about 8 seconds now instead of being on there all the time. This is the only true ad I see since I'm using ad-block plus, the latest version of Firefox, and Win7.
