AT&T Frequent Packet Loss To A Particular Node/Hop

I play an online game that for the last 2-3 weeks has had very frequent disconnect issues. At first I wondered if it was the servers for the company themselves, but after running numerous ping and traceroute tests I have narrowed down the issue to the following ip address within the hops: 71.157.120.34

I get roughly 70-80% packet loss to this ip address. None of the other ip addresses within the hops experience packet loss besides this one, outside of whenever I briefly restart my router or something like that which I did during the ongoing test that I included a picture of at the end of this post. I'm unsure of what to do to try and address this.

Also, it might be helpful to mention that I do not experience these disconnect issues when using a VPN. This was the first sign to me that this was an ISP related issue, since when I am rerouting my traffic through a VPN that uses different hops, I do not experience this packet loss nor frequent disconnect issue whatsoever.

The ip address of the game server that I am connecting to while experiencing these issues is: 24.105.62.129, and I reside in Reno, NV.

Here is a picture of an ongoing connection test.packet loss 2.jpg

Hi @skatecL5,

We're here to help. Do you have the gateway set to have it in IP Passthrough/DMZplus mode? Alternately, do you have the router working in Access Point mode, with DHCP disabled? We look forward to your response.

Hi there. Yeah I have the gateway in IP Passthrough/DMZplus so that I can use a Nighthawk R6400 as my DHCP server and home router.

Hello @skatecL5,

What game are you playing?

I tried pinging https://soc.att.com/2QDSt8z from our end and am also noticing dropped frames.

Also, are you experiencing issues with other games as well?

Please let us know.

I'm playing World of Warcraft when this is happening. When I was playing Rainbow Six Siege last night I also noticed some intermittent packet loss, although it isn't too common for me on that game so I chalked it up to bad luck.

Hi @skatecL5,

Try to use VPN while accessing the games you're trying to play. Let us know if this improves packet loss.

Hi Dee,

Using the VPN does eliminate the packet loss issues. That is how I have been having to play for the last few weeks without getting the latency issues. I am using a VPN in California and when I trace the route it's using it does not go through the node that my normal connection does which seems to be causing the packet loss. Which is frustrating because it gives me an additional 20ms in most games that I play it with, however that's how i've been dealing with it for the time being. Do you think this is an issue with one of AT&T's nodes since you guys are seeing it too?
