Fix Blinking Red Broadband Issues

The fastest way to get back in service and get rid of the blinking red broadband light is to perform one or all of the following:

Restart the modem

Secure cable connections

Factory Reset the modem (Last)

Press the red reset button for 5 seconds. This can also be done with Smart Home Manager. Check to see if cables are unplugged, if they are, plug them back in. Press and hold the red button for 20 seconds. This will clear custom settings.
Check out our how-to videos. Just choose your modem. Check image below  Smart Home Manager currently does not support factory reset.

Also, please be wary of any change that may have occurred around the time service dropped like: adding new equipment, storms, power loss or something out of the ordinary.

  • Surge protectors and power strips can cause resets and over time, cause the modem to fail. Plug the modem directly into a wall outlet if possible
  • If you added 3rd party equipment (ie: Router) to the modem/Gateway, try unplugging the new equipment from the modem. Make sure all of your devices are connected to the modem. If the connection is successful, this indicates a 3rd party equipment issue
  • If there was a recent storm or power loss, there could be an issue with the equipment inside or outside your home. Use the tools below to run tests and check for an outage.

Troubleshoot and check for outages

To check for an outage, visit our Service Outage Page.

  • You can use your zip code or sign in to your account to check.

To troubleshoot, visit our Internet Support Page. If you are signed in, a check will be performed automatically.

  • You can also perform the same system checks our calls perform from your PC or device.

Thanks,

Hello,

Why does the red light flashing mean. I had new service installed Saturday and this morning, the service to my TV didn't work. So I read the directions from the TV. Then noticed the red flashing light. I unplugged it, waited for 10 seconds, and then plugged it back in. Seems to be working now... But why exactly does this happen. Anyone know? I will be working from home in the sometimes and do not want problem with my internet service.

Hi ggena32,

I apologize about the inconveniences, but I will be glad to look into that for you further. Depedning on what light was blinking red, there may not have been a major issue at all.

If the Power light was blinking red, it may be an issue with the modem, or just a simple power surge that caused it.

If the Broadband light was blinking red, that means physical connection to our network, and it could be anything from a bad modem, wiring issue, or outage.

If the Service light was blinking red, it means it could no longer authenticate a connection with our server, and that could just be an outage or an issue with the equipment.

Also, I will be sending you a private message to get more information from you, so I can run some line tests to make sure everything is alright, so be on the lookout for it.

I now have a flashing red light on Broadband 1. My internet is working, tv and computer, but the wireless connection to my printer is not working and will not print.

Currently going thru the same situation, my nvg589 is blinking red on the broadband2 light, this issue has been on going for some time, a tech was here last week and swapped out my gateway and found an issue at the NODE and said they needed a line team to come out and repair my 2nd line, I went out of town and came home yesterday only to still see a blinking red light. I see no open service ticket on file either. The worst part about all of this is the hassle of calling in for and scheduling repair. In this day and age of hi-tech, they should KNOW my gateway is sending an error code and repair on their end. Frustrated and about ready to abort uverse after 4+ fairly good years. I hate calling in for service, the automated menu is very hideous.

Same here.  I know it's the service that keeps dropping but when you call in for service (I HATE that as well), the Tech that comes out always pretends it's something else so AT&T doesn't look bad.  They can't keep the service going.  THAT is the problem.

Here is how I FINALLY fixed mine: after making numerous calls the to "service" line and waiting months for them to come run a new underground line which was supposed to be the end all cure all, I STILL had the same flashing broadband 2 light , so I in the towel, got rid of uverse tv and went to the lowest speed internet att offers, DIRECTV gets my TV $ money now and all is good. Appears the dual band technology is too new or too hard for the techs to get working correctly, life is too short to fight stuff like thisMan Tongue I would however like to thank att uverse tech SadathCS for trying to go above and beyond to solve my issues, we exchanged many an email and he was professional and courteous in every one of them. Ciao!
