Assuming that you have an iOS phone (iPhone), you can try these steps
1.Tap Settings - Wi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is off, turn it on by tapping the on/off icon.
2. Available Wi-Fi networks appears under "Choose a Network..."
3. Locate and tap the Wi-Fi network you want to join.
Normally, your Uverse wireless home network will say ATTxxx or 2Wirexxx. It may require a wireless password. You may refer to the yellow sticker on the Residential Gateway and look for the "Wireless Network Key" as the default wireless password.
If you have an Android phone, you may refer to the following steps.
Touch the Settings icon on a Home or All Apps screen.
Touch Wireless & networks > Wi-Fi.
Slide the Wi-Fi switch to the On position. The device scans for available Wi-Fi networks and displays the names of those it finds. Secured networks are indicated with a Lock icon. If the device finds a network that you connected to previously, it connects to it.
Touch a network name to see more details or connect to it. If the network is secured, you're prompted to enter a password or other credentials.

Knowing what kind of equipment you have is essential to answering your question.
Exactly what kind of cell phone do you have? Exactly what type of equipment is being used for WiFi.
