Upgrading AT&T Uverse modem/Routers

[ Edited ]

AT&T Forum

I'll post my question to the community because after129 minutes of working with AT&T tecnical support

I got no where.

Bottom line is I want to take advantage of my laptops 802.11N wireless band capabilities.  I currently have an AT&T model 3801HGV modem/router which is not N band capable.  AT&T sells an upgraded modem/router the PACE  DSL Gateway Model 4111N.  Is it simple a case of replaceing Modem/Routers?  Or would I also need to increase my banbwidth too? I presently am under the 12 Mbps plan.

Hello Reichmaj,

My name is Morgan, I'm one of the U-verse Community Specialists. I appreciate you providing detailed info on your equipment. You are correct, recently AT&T released new gateway models that support wireless 802.11N. The 3801HGV is typically used to support all 3 U-verse services but, if you don't have U-verse TV service then it's possible that we could swap out the 2Wire/Pace 3801 unit for a 2Wire/Pace 5301NV Gateway which also supports the wireless 802.11N. I'm going to send you a private message that will land in your inbox and we will move forward from there. Thank you! Smiley Happy

Re: Upgrading AT&T Uverse modem/Routers

Hello, the 3801 is a leased unit for TV services, internet and VOIP on a VDSL circuit.
The 4111 is a purchased internet or internet, voip service on ADSL2+.

Conclusion different types of Uverse means 4111 is not a replacement for the 3801.
If you do not have tv service you may purchase the Pacee 5031 RG for $100, this is a N RG with 4 standard ports.

If you currently have TV service cannot purchase an ATT RG only leased (rented)
For tv service N the current model is the 589, this is being deployed on bonded pair install due to distance, or singe pair installs such as your on for those who upgrade to the Power (45M) internet.
Otherwise have same options others have had using the 3600,3800, or 3801 RGs the past few years, purchase you own N router and place behind the 3801.

Lots of options for you, but the Pace 4111 is not one of them. Hope this helps.

my thoughts

Well at least you email was the most informative.  I'm still unable to get anywhere with AT&T technical support.

Allow me to rephrase my question - if i wanted to take advantage of the 802.11N protocol capabilities of my home laptops what AT&T service and modem/router should I have.  No TV necessary only VOIP and internet.

Re: Upgrading AT&T Uverse modem/Routers

Only one option meets your criteria, the Pace 5031 NV, contact sales dept to order, price $100.

As you VOIP and HSIA, suspect you were a CSI, equipment shipped did not work (loop length to long for 3600) tech installed 3801 to provide service.
Admittedly could have had tv service, canceled and kept using your original supplied RG, but odds are better first case.
With the 3801 as a leased or rented unit paying extra every month for RG....

For quick info http://www.pace.com/americas/products/gateways/vdsl/5031nv/

Need ATT provisioned unit, as this is a customer owned RG, that was released earlier this year, you may find a used one on ebay, no warranty.
A new purchased unit comes with a one year warranty, hope this answers your question.

Re: Upgrading AT&T Uverse modem/Routers

This is probably the wrong thread for this but I need help.

I have a 3801hgv gateway and i have two Xbox 360s connected to it and only one gets a open nat while the other is always on strict. This occurs when they are both in use.

How can i remedy this issue and will setting up a router behind this gateway help me out?

Re: Upgrading AT&T Uverse modem/Routers

Hello Morgan,

I'm also very interested in replacing my 2Wire 3600 with the Pace 5031. Would appreciate your help in facilitating that.

Thanks.
