Latency issue

Latency issue

I've been experiencing latency issues with my connection for months now. It's very noticeable on VOIP calls e.g. Skype as well as gaming (anything that requires extremely low latency).

Every 45 seconds or so I get a predictable, consistent spike in latency.  Using the ping utility, I can see requests go from ~30ms to ~1000ms (you can imagine how a one second delay affects real-time gaming). I've removed everything from my network, tried different routers, and had an ATT tech come out and tell me that the signal to my house is excellent. The techs don't seem to be trained in testing or diagnosing latency problems. Unfortunately this tech wasn't familiar with the ping utility and didn't seem to fully understand my problem.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. This issue is unacceptable for work VOIP calls. I'm paying for the highest-tier plan and I don't feel like I'm getting what I'm paying for.

Re: Latency issue

Hi @mnichols1313,

We will be delighted to help!

Ping and Traceroute are useful tools to determine latency and browsing issues. If you do notice issues:

  1. Try testing on multiple devices. Preferably with a hard wired connection.
  2. Test with all 3rd party hardware removed.
  3. Disable IPv6.
  4. Change your DNS.

Let us know if you need anything else!

Re: Latency issue

Thanks for the reply.  I ran ping side-by-side on two different laptops and it turns out the issue is only happening on one of them. I'm completely surprised. I honestly would have never guessed it was something wrong with the laptop, but I will take it in to Apple to see what they can find.

Re: Latency issue

So my issue turned out to be entirely related to my computer. I have a MacBook and the issue was caused by location services. I had to disable location services for the problem to go away. The issue had nothing to do with my internet connection.

Here is a work-around for the problem until Apple fixes this bug: https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/263638/macbook-pro-experiencing-ping-spikes-to-local-route...
