There isn't any thing you can buy to avoid the equipment fee. AT&T changed policy in January of 2015 that all U-verse Internet subscribers pay a $7.00 "equipment fee" unless they had already purchased a Gateway from AT&T at that time and haven't terminated service or changed out that Gateway since.
Some new customer discounts provide a monthly credit to offset the equipment fee, but that's not something you can buy.
