setting up att.net in Outlook/Office 365

I had my att.net account set up in Outlook/Office 365.  Over the past week, I kept getting pop up screen asking me to confirm password, etc.

 

Finally, I deleted the account and have tried to re-set it up.  No luck.

 

I used the automatic way - no luck

I used IMAP using imap.mail.att.net     993    Yes    smtp.mail.att.net    465     -  no luck

Tried IMAP using imap.mail.yahoo.com   993   Yes   amtp.mail.yahoo.com    465   - no luck

 

The error message states:

 

The connection to the incoming (IMAP) server was dropped.  Please check the incoming (IMAP) server settings and try again.

 

Appreciate any and all assistance.

So you have a legacy account (sbcglobal.net, etc.)?

Have you tried using a secure mail key in place of the password in your client?  Read this.

You may have some other setting wrong (password authentication method perhaps?).

I have an ATT.net account on Windows 10 with Outlook 365
After many attempts to get addapt the outlook 2016 and outlook 365 instuction to work with out success, here is what worked for me.  I removed my account and was able to repeat it so hope fully it works for you and other also.

Step 1 - Get Secure mail Key

1. Go to Profile > Sign-in info.
   https://m.att.com/myatt/native/deepLink.html?action=Profile&appInstall=N
2. Select the email account that you want to get a secure mail key for. 
3. Scroll to Secure mail key and select Manage secure mail key.
4. If you have more than one email address, select the one you want to use.
5. Select Add secure mail key.
6. Enter a nickname for the secure mail key to make it easier to recognize.
7. Select Create secure mail key.
8. Select Copy secure mail key to clipboard.
9. Select OK.

Step 2 - Add account to Outlook 365

1. File > Add Account.
2. Type in full email address
3. Expand Advanced options
4. Select "Let me set up my account manually"
5. Select "Connect"
6. Select IMAP
Screen says password so, you should type in password right?  No!!!
7. Paste in Secure mail Key, select "Connect"
8. Done

In reference to the dlrobertshaw message above:  In Step 2, I found that after statement No. 2 (Type in full email address), rather than follow statement Nos. 3 and 4 (Expand Advanced options, and Select "Let me set up my account manually") I could just choose connect, and when it then asks for my password, I pasted the security key.  All went fine from there.

Had to play with the server settings a bit.

Incoming

U/N [email address]

P/W [at&T secure mail p/w]

check Remember password

Server imap.mail.yahoo.com Port 993

Encryption method SSL/TLS

Outgoing

Server smtp.mail.yahoo.com Port 465

Encryption method SSL/TLS

One of my PCs wanted "My outgoing (SMTP) server requires authorization" checked and also Log on using my name and password. The other wanted "Use same setting as my incoming mail server"
