email id & pw problems

Last Sat I switched from DSL to U-verse. After getting everything settled, all was well.

Starting this morning, my emailsub account could receive but not send. The main account was OK until a few hours ago when it no longer receives or sends. I use Thunderbird and am intimate with the settings. Nothing had been changed before or after the switch and now I have these problems.

I spoke with support many times and no help.

I have since tried every iteration of ATT(Bellsouth)servers and nothing works...except for the sub account at the moment, mail.bellsouth.net is the only server working for inbound and that one is a proxy.

Yes, the webmail works as does the third party "mail2web" program...for both in and out.

I have all my records and mail on Thunderbird and want to continue.

On one of my calls to support, they hinted that ATT is having a problem with moving emails from DSL to U-verse, consistent with the Yahoo problems that go along with it.

In the past year or so, ATT has had this ongoing problem with the pw and ID errors recurring. It was always an ATT problem by their admission and each time they eventually corrected it. So far nothing.

In addition to that, in order for me to sign into this Community, I have to request a password change each time. For some reason, that logs me in. Maybe I forgot my ID, but I cannot find a way to recover it. They keep sending me a page with 2 IDs but neither one seems to work. Only resetting the password each time works.

Please help...

thanks....

Hi burris_1,

I apologize for the inconveniences you are having with sending/receiving with your e-mail accounts on Thunderbird.

Due to the change from DSL to U-verse, you may want to check your settings to see if there are any changes.

The settings should be as follow:

POP Server: inbound.att.net using port 995 (requires SSL)

SMTP Server: outbound.att.net using port 465 (requiers SSL)

You should also have a check next to "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication."

Finally, if you are having issues stating that your password is incorrect, there may have been a captcha flag triggered and you just want to login to both AT&T webmail sites to clear it.

  1. Go to att.net and click on mail
  2. Sign in and then log out
  3. Go to mail.yahoo.com
  4. Sign in

That should hopefully get everything working. If not, let us know the exact error you get when trying to send/receive.

Hi, David..

I followed your instructions and uncovered some strange things.

I did log into att.net and it required an email I had to set up many moon ago, who knows why...but it did get me in..and then I signed out.

Went to yahoo mail and discovered 3 things.

When signing in with the id I just mentioned, it took me to a yahoo mail site that had 4 emails back to Dec 12.

If I sign into Yahoo home page with my bmillstone@bellsouth.net address, I get "my.yahoo.com" home page along with the original yahoo email account I have set up but almost never used...has emails and tons of spam in it.

If I go to the basic yahoo.com screen, I get into my yahoo email that mirrors my Thunderbird mail(when TBird is working).

I would think that I have a number of login and passwords floating around and this is causing my email problem.

I did mention that before the switch from DSL to U-verse, except for the occasional ATT PW and ID problems, I had no email issues.

What's strange is that with the correct email account settings, sometimes it works and most of the time not. And this is on both the main account as well as the sub account.

I'm sure you're aware of this, but I just accessed it on the ATT support site....

===

"If you're using Outlook, MacMail, or another email client and getting expired certificate errors that won't let you send email, rest assured that it's a known issue. Yahoo! and AT&T are currently working to resolve it. You can still send and receive emails by logging in on att.net and using the webmail platform."

====

If this is indeed true and they do fix it, maybe my mail will come up again. Maybe it's possible to purge all att related id's and pw's and I can set up new ones.

Now I an using the email fetch program that gmail has and it does pick up the bellsouth mail.

I addition to that, each time I try to access this Community site, it tells me my id and pw is wrong. If I then ask them to send me an email, it comes and when I click on the log in here line , I get signed in automatically and I have to repeat this each time????

thanks for all your help

Hi burris_1,

Thank you for testing that for me. That is definitely something unique. It appears that there are multiple accounts that may be floating around on the computer, and probably, in our ATT server. I am not sure if you can possibly test on another computer to start fresh?

Also, regarding the website, are you manually typing it in, or does it auto populate for you when you go to the site?

Same problem from other machines..

The Community site starts to auto populate and then comes up with a note inside the id box that says...enter first 2 letters??  No matter what I try, goes nowhere.

thanks..

I am guessing all the machines probably have the same settings, because the auto populate is not something we provide, but it is a feature on the computer. Still, that should not effect Thunderbird. Were you able to check the settings on Thunderbird to see if there were any differences vs the ones for U-verse?

clouds123 - Do you have outlook on your computer or do you need to get it first? Perhaps the place you get it from can help you set it up.

If you have it, you just need to add the account credentials in the settings (i.e. create an account that accesses your e-mail account)/ Here is a summary for att accounts - http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB401570#fbid=WVsAi2pAJw-

I had problems with receiving email using one sub account. I searched Thunderbird for all exchanges using that email, then either:

1) gave the person a different email,

2) gave the company a new disposable email,

3) ignored them.

Then I deleted the sub account. BTW, AT&T told me they were trying to get rid of sub-accounts on yahoo.

I had problems with sign-ons. You have multiple PC's? Same here. To keep things clean, I stopped checking "stay signed on" and let email automatically sign-off when I closed the browser. It didn't take long for my sign-on attempts to settle down. Might not help you but should be easier to figure out what's happening.
