I have DSL only and was wondering if you can have a home alarm hook up without actual phone line?

If you have a standard landline with DSL you should be fine.
Where the alarm systems can have problems is with VOIP or Voice Over IP. You would have to have Uverse Voice for that, or something like Magic Jack.
