Learn How AT&T Is Making Your Email More Secure With Oauth & Secure Mail Key

Email_Security_.pngAT&T and Yahoo are making your email more secure. The new security implementation, also known as Open Authentication(OAuth), works by encrypting your credentials to better protect them from hackers. During this change, you may have trouble logging into some email applications. Not to worry, there is a solution.

When Will This Happen?

Very soon!.

(You can make the changes now by reviewing our online support page for information and assistance.)

What You Need to Do

If using the web to access your email, there is nothing you need to do as our web experience is already OAuth compatible (check below). If you are already using the OAuth settings within mail you may be directed to re-sign in, and if you are using a non-OAuth compatible application, you will need to upgrade to one of the OAuth compatible apps listed below and select Yahoo as your service provider when you sign in. If you do not remember your password, reset it now

Or

Create A Secure Mail Key

What is a Secure Mail Key? it is a 16-character one-time password used in email applications in lieu of an OAuth flow.  Create your key now.

To verify your Application is compatible or for additional FAQs and information, visit our support page.

Compatible vs. Non-Compatible OAuth Applications

OAuth Compatible

Non-OAuth Compatible

The applications listed below are OAuth compatible. Note that you are using OAuth only if you selected Yahoo as your provider when you set up your account in the application.

If you are unsure if you selected Yahoo during account setup, see “How do I know if I used OAuth/selected Yahoo to set up my account?” below.

If you use one of the applications below, you need to upgrade to an OAuth compatible application.

If you prefer to continue using your current application, you’ll need to create a secure mail key to use with it.

I have received the text about updating and looked at the info on the link suggested...if my email is already a Yahoo type, do I still need to do anything?

I got the email about the OAuth and it says I may need to change the way I sign into my email. What I want to know is if I already use my iPhone Mail app to access my email, do I need to do anything?

The problem I am having is that every time I  log into my email account thru an approved email app (Yahoo Mail) it redirects me to ATT website where I am asked at least twice to enter my email and password, then it proceeds to log me in, but logs me out of the same app on other devices.  It seems like I can only log onto two at the most without being kicked out.  This is very frustrating as I have a desktop, a laptop, a phone, and a tablet for which I use at various times of the day, yet I can not get all of them logged in.

If you are unsure if you selected Yahoo during account setup, see “How do I know if I used OAuth/selected Yahoo to set up my account?” below.

Where is this information...I've looked below and don't see it...???

If my email outgoing and incoming servers are yahoo.com - does this mean I'm using OAuth? Yes or No?

If yes, nothing else is required? Yes or No?

If my servers are yahoo.com and I'm using Outlook 2019 does this change any of above answers? Yes or No?

If any changes are required, what exactly are they? Thank you.

Today I tried to log in to my email my usual way. I use Chrome browser on my smartphone, go to Currently.com and log in. Today after I entered my password I was sent to a page that requested "a pin, fingerprint or other verification." I don't use an email app on my phone ( Moto Z3). I was able to log into my AT&T email on my wife's old smartphone using Chrome and on my computer. Any suggestions?

I am completely unable to create a secure email key because there is NO OPTION for secure mail key on my profile page.  NONE.  NOWHERE ON MY PROFILE PAGE. NOT IN ANY DROP DOWN MENU ON MY PROFILE PAGE. I've spent 90 minutes with AT&T tech support on the telephone who are completely flummoxed.  They eventually sent me to wireless help who transferred me to yet a different support department, which is when I gave up.  HELP!  I CANNOT USE OUTLOOK WITHOUT A SECURE MAIL KEY.

Mine has quit working tonight.  Everything else that uses my ID works, such as TV, the myATT app, etc.  I can access e-mail via the web browser, but that is it.  Phone, windows 10, windows 8, Chromebook... none will work.  I also don't see where to create this key.  And, some of these clients are oAuth compatible, so I shouldn't need it.  Hopefully this is resolved soon.  I've also tried changing my password, still doesn't help.

I tried calling too, they got me off the line by giving me the phone number of "Tech Connect" which turns out to be a pay technical support service.  But, I've figured out that they must have turned this crappy oauth on for my account tonight.  But, here is the catch, even if you have an oauth compliant client (for me I have Yahoo mail on Chromebook and Windows Mail on Windows 10), you have to delete the account on those clients and re-add it so it adds it with oauth instead of imap/smtp.

I've yet to find the ability ANYWHERE on the AT&T site to create this elusive secure mail key.  But, I think the failure on their part is I'm not currently an AT&T internet customer, so I don't have the ability to add new e-mail address, manage them, etc.  So, I'll bet that's where it is supposed to be and my scenario has fallen through the cracks.  If you go over to Yahoo, and try to do anything like this, it just re-routes you back to AT&T pages that go nowhere.
