Att classic mail

Are we going to be able to keep using the classic?  I really don't want to be forced out of my e-mail.  Didn't like the new look last time and really don't want the newer more improved version.  It will be way to confusing for me. I am sure I will not be the only one who doesn't want to be forced into this change.

As I understand it if you don't switch to one of the so called "supported" browsers you will be "forced" to the classic layout.  Already if you don't use one of those browsers you should be in classic anyhow.  The only thing missing from classic is the ability to switch back to "full featured".

I already have Chrome.  I just want to keep Classic mail as I have it now.

So I assume nothing will change.  It will remain as basic as it does now.  I'm just a user here and have no control over this.  If they want to change they will change it.

As I keep stating, I have Chrome which is one of the supported browsers and I don't want to switch to the new mail.  I have Classic now and want to keep it. No one yet has given me a real answer.

If they revert you to the new layout and don't remove the setting in settings->viewing mail->mail version (or whatever form that takes in the new layout) to select it as it presently has then select it.

 

I really don't understand all these posts about "will the new webmail be able to do or keep such and such".  Att has only said the new features are coming.  Period.  I don't work for att so anything I say is just speculation some educated guesses.  When the stuff comes, it comes.   Knowing what is going to be supported or not supported is not going to change anything.  They will do what they want to do.  I'm sure there will be a lot of complaints about everyone's favorite feature changing or disappearing when the updates happen.  Look at all the grumbling even now in the announcement thread (mostly, "leave the webmail alone" kinds of grumbling).

I appreciate your thoughts but this is NOT a solution or answer.  It is a speculation based on your guess of what AT&T might be doing. I hope there is someone who actually can answer my question.

I said in paragraph 2 of post 6 it was "speculation some educated guesses".   This is as close an answer as you are going to get (I, by the way didn't flag it as a solution, a forum moderator did).  You are not going to get anybody from att coming on here and telling you what is or is not going to be ahead of time.  And I still don't understand why you are so obsessed now about knowing or not knowing.  How is that going to change anything?  Do you have a fall back plan?  Another email provider perhaps?

What makes you think you are going to find a webmail which is as minimal as the basic layout you currently have?  As far as I know the yahoo basic is, IMO, so lobotomized no one is going to provide such a minimal interface since the majority of the population would never use it.  But good luck to you and happy hunting.  Maybe you will get lucky.  Or maybe, as I speculated, you won't have to change anything.

I completely understand.  My email switched to "classic" about a month ago and it is absolutely dreadful.  I hope that AT&T or Yahoo, whoever is doing this crap, gets this fixed.  This is absolutely ridiculous.

I feel like I'm missing something here. Over a  year ago I, of my own volition, switched to the new format (they did not switch me), and you can easily switch back and forth all day, every day. I do it often in the course of experimenting. ATT has not forced me back to "classic", either. Why would they? They've been touting the bejesus out of the new format to get us to move over, I assume so they shut down the old one sooner or later. 

 

One thing I don't like, and read  it's a done deal, with the new format you can not set one of 2 or more email account to "store and forward" email to another, be it a secondary ATT email or gmail or hotmail or whatever. My original, very first account of 25+ yrs ago  became corrupted and ATT would not fix it, so I just left it and created a new email addr, but in order not to have to tell anyone, I just told my old acct to forward to my new acct, so it does not matter which email people use for me. This feature is allegedly going away, unless they grandfather it. You can not enable it or look at it without toggling back to "classic" to check settings since the new format has no such setting.

 

For the person worrying about complexity rocking the boat so he/she does not want to change, I don't see any added complexity or big new feature-set to learn. It's not a big deal. It's mainly just cosmetics or packaging. The item just described is the only difference I have found. You will not lose anything, all folders remain intact, all emails stay where they are, life goes on  without a wrinkle, except for forwarding email to other accounts. So far, no change to the email forwarding I mentioned, still works fine and it's been in place for a year.

 

The other thing I don't get is this is not new a new thing, at least not in California with an AT&T pacbell.net domain. This new format  has been out and stable (for me) for over a year. It's currently late Feb of 2019.

The "full featured" webmail was the default back then.  A year ago would be Feb 2018.  At that time there was no "new" webmail.  It happened in the last quarter of 2018 (don't remember the exact date).  The "new" layout has more-or-less the same functions as "full featured" but referred to as "new" (and "basic" referred to as "classic") with the same functions as "full featured", some of the buttons moved around, and they slapped on a new paint job.

They wouldn't.  Like the older layout it has always been your choice (again if you are using a supported browser).  If you want to limit yourself to the limited functions classic provides no one is stopping you.

Initially the "new" webmail didn't have the forwarding settings.  It was added later to the Mailboxes account settings.  But they don't give you the choice of marking the webmail read as they do in classic.  So if you want that option you need to set it in from classic POP&Forwarding.  Whether that option actually works or not I haven't tested.  But forwarding certainly does.  I use that myself to another non-att/yahoo email account.  However, I am not so sure about forwarding from one att/yahoo account to another att/yahoo account.  Occasionally I see reports in these forums of users having problems with that.  If it doesn't work maybe the problem is that the att/yahoo servers don't like forwarding within the same universe of servers.

Yeah, there was this announcement about forwarding going away December 5, 2018.  It's way past that date, and they since added the forwarding option back into the "new" layout.  So I wouldn't take that announcement too seriously anymore. FWIW the way it's stated it is allowing forwarding within the att/yahoo accounts just not out to other email service providers.  Well maybe forwarding to other att/yahoo accounts works after all.Man Surprised

 

This new format has been out and stable (for me) for over a year. It's currently late Feb of 2019.

Thank you! much of what you say is my understanding from either reading or experimentation. On the store and forwarding, I'm encouraged to hear they will retain that for an ATT to ATT account, the way I use it. I also observed you could only go in and fiddle with it by toggling back to "classic" mail as I could find no settings for it in the new format. I will take another look after  your comments.

 

For reasons unknown, my original acct going back maybe 20+ yrs to pacbell.net days in NorCal, my folder structure became badly messed with deep nesting and empty folders x a huge number too large for me to manually delete/rename or whatever without spending days at the keyboard. Calling ATT was a fail as they declined to fix it because "we might delete something important". So, my only option was to walk away from the account, create a new one (empty inbox of course) then forward so people could still use my old (and new too) email address. Over a year later, this continues to work just fine. And, if I need an old email from a year ago, I just go into that old acct. with yahoo webmail (normally use eMClient).

 

Now, just to ensure I am on the same page, my "classic" or "basic" version looks really, really basic and I see nothing full featured about it. I'll try to insert/attach a screen shot below. Is this what you're talking about?

Here's a bigger version. You can see my messed up folder situation along the left margin. All folders with the same name and most empty. But, the mass delete does not work, so to clean that up, I'd have  had to touch each folder one at a time times well over a hundred. I had more important work to do watching paint dry, so abandoned the account and started over.
