250 gB data limit for at&t?
hi, I am considering switching from Charter Communications to AT&T for internet. While i was searching Google, i came across an article that says that there is a 250 GB limit for internet. Is that true? I am a PC gamer that used 509 GB of internet last month. I did a lot of filesharing through bittorrent (324 GB) not illegal stuff, just the battlefield 4 17 minute video and daemon tools lite, along with some creative commons music shared free online by the artists, for example, dj shadow. which was the majority, and the other data was from watching 1080p gameplay videos and uploading my own gameplay videos. On charter's terms and conditions, it says 100 GB max, but everyone knows that the terms and conditions are from 2007, which need to be updated. Charter has stated in their terms and conditions that it is 250 GB max, but they have not called me nor warned me once, i guess because charter is okay with people going over 250 GB and none of my other fellow PC gamers that also have charter that go way over the limit, they have not been called by Charter once? Charter is getting a bit more expensive after 12 months, so i am thinking of changing companies. How does AT&T treat customers that go over 250 gB? Does AT&T not care, or does the worst case scenario occur and i suddenly find a huge bill coming to me? When i asked Charter about the limit all they said was not to worry about it, and i was ok
also for your gigabytes do you use binary system of measurement or easier system of measurement (1024 mB=1 gB or 1000 mB=1 gB)

They have not been enforcing the limits yet, they have only been threatening for a couple of months. I am guessing they are serious and we are going to start seeing these charges starting in January.
I really hope they would reconsider this limit. I understand that they want to extract more money for the same (or inferior) service, we all do, but this is the wrong way to go about this.
But of course they are not going to drive me away. They are the only game in town... so thank you sir, may I have another?

Comcast is enforcing a 300GB cap in the south east. I called ATT to switch only to discover they copied what comcast is doing except that they only let you have 250 GB on u-verse.
So no sale for them. But what are the citizens of this country going to do? We are being exploited by these evil companies. It's effectively an oligopoly. They don't even need to collude. They just wait for the other one to start ripping off their customers, then they do the exact same thing.
The government is worthless. They are bought and paid for from top to bottom. It's like living in a soviet era country.

As for the govt being responsible for the data caps and overage charges, as far as I can tell, this is the supposed free market at work. One company eats up other companies and gains virtual monopoly because of the lack of govt regulation. Prices are high compared to Europe, and speed low compared to Europe, because of the lack of government oversight.
Now Comcast is going to try to buy Time Warner Cable, resulting in less competition. I believe the govt has to approve, but in order to stop the buyout, it has to be in violation of antitrust or some such laws. I HOPE this buyout is denied. It won't be good news for consumers.
If the govt tried to pass more restrictive laws, all heck would break loose, with allegations of communism, socialism, interfering with the free market, you name it. But it's true that these huge corporations pay big bucks to the politicians for votes beneficial to the companies. Now that they have been freed of donation regulations by a conservative Supreme Court, and for-profit corporations have been declared to be "people," it is even harder to stop them now.

Right now my only hope is Google Fiber. They'll probably never be in my area, but I hope that when they come to the Bay Area which is on their list, that AT&T will finally adjust their prices and my price structure will be included. But, knowing AT&T they will only lower their prices/raise their service in the areas directly affected by Google Fiber.

holy crap i just checked out that google fiber, wow! I really hope Atlanta gets the google fiber soon.
1000 megabits. crazy speed at only 70 bucks per month! are they serious?

Tell me about it. Plus, Google is GIVING AWAY 5 Mbps with unlimited data. Right now I'm forced to pay AT&T $90/mo for 6 Mbps with no upgrades or cheaper prices in sight. At least AT&T gets to enjoy the $18 billion in profits they made last year.

I just found out about this 250GB CAP limit today. And I am extremely mad about that.. ATT makes more then enough money from there consumers to give us unlimited Bandwidth. Most people dont even reach that 250GB cap. But for the people that do it ridiculous. We pay for the internet service monthly, We shouldn't be capped on bandwidth. And ok say you dont use your 250GB bandwidth for that month say you only use 100GB.. Does that extra 150GB rollover to the next month? Probably not. I have been an ATT customer for over 10 years... and this is crazy. I can't wait till GOOGLE FIBER comes to my area.. They will be offering 1TB upload/download Service for $70 a month. With no B/W Caps. ATT you make more then enough money why do you feel the need to enforce this Bandwidth CAP. Your just ticking off your happy consumers, That you may lose to a different ISP because of this. Get it together take off the B/W CAP and stop being greedy. my 2 cents

yeah there is nothing i can do right now because the only choices in my area are Charter Communications and AT&T. there needs to be more competition in my area. Charter, in my opinion, isn't that bad but I have been off contract for a few years now and prices are starting to go up.
I don't see how I will be able to keep up with the cap on AT&T. I am already streaming 4K content on Netflix and Youtube.
4k/2160p is using about 5-7 GB per hour in terms of bandwidth. that means on AT&T I would eat up the 250 GB in about 40 hours on just video alone.
last month i used 947 GB. 947 gigabytes! Mostly because of the videos I have been watching and game downloads.
If I had AT&T, I would be paying around $200 a month or more because of overuse charges. something like that.....
maybe the FCC can get involved with AT&T's ridiculous data cap.

You won't be happy. You won't get the bandwidth you think you're getting. You'll be overcharged for the service you're getting. And God forbid you ever need to call AT&T for customer service - because you'll spend hours on the phone trying to make your case, only to hang up in frustration because you've been given the run around.
You're a gamer. Call your local cable company and ask for the best bandwith offering available. If need be - get a business account which steps you up to a whole different level of service.

This is rediculous you just admitted that you are a data hogger, without data caps in place people like you would force the carriers to raise the prices for everyone else and reduce quality of service for the majority so the minority can do whatever they want and not pay extra for it!!!!
and what's worse you want the goverment to force the ISP's to let you to continue hogging bandwitch at no additional charge or for almost nothing at all!!
I am in full support of a bandwidth cap cause of people like you.. You have a sense of entitlement that you are OWED all you can eat bandwidth. Doesn't work that way. If you get your way people like me who are NOT data hoggers will pay through the nose just so you can!!! that's not right. in addition the ISP would be forced to make upgrades to the network to accomadate the extra traffic WHICH means higher montly rates to recoup the costs!!! then entitled people like you will then turn around and complain about the extremely high prices and the network slow down cause of it.
I work for an ISP (not At&t) and of course a customer so i see both sides of the story. If you want to hog bandwidth you should pay more cause you are a higher burden to the ISP you raise the cost of operation and are a detriment to your neighbors. sorry to say but that's the truth. ISP's are a business to make a profit not a charity to give you everything you want and desire and get only PENNIES for it. if you want to be a bandwidth hogger look into a business account so you will get a service and pay a FAIR price. I get soo tired of people expecting the sun moon and stars but yet expect to pay little or nothing for it in return. can't buy a chevy and expect performance of a jaguar ain't happening keep your expectations real and you will have a easier life.
