Static IP's with GigaPower

Static IP's with GigaPower

Hello All. Just a simple question here...

I currently have U-Verse here in Austin (fiber to the premise) and have a static IP block through AT&T. My question is if I upgrade, will AT&T allow static IP's with GigaPower? I can't find any information concerning this anywhere else.

This is sort of a "make or break" option for me, and I am eligible for GigaPower at my location.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Static IP's with GigaPower

You can get static IP's with Uverse HSI.  Doesn't matter the size of the "pipe".  Pro, Max, Max Plus, Gigapower, etc.

Re: Static IP's with GigaPower

Thanks Morgan!  I need to think about it, as from what I've seen the DHCP address does NOT change that often, and NAT/Forwarding rules seem(!) to work very well for me for what I need.

I assume the TOS still prohibits "public" servers on the RESI service.

Re: Static IP's with GigaPower

If I recall correctly, you can have "public" servers, but you can't have "commercial" servers.

So you can host information for a hobby or your local recreational sports team, but you couldn't start an web hosting business.  I read the restrictions in 10a as stating that you can't make your connection available for public use to access the Internet via your connection, e.g. by creating a public hotspot.

Please check the TOC and Acceptable Use Policies for yourself, though.

Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

I have a /29 block of ip addresses which are causing some websites to have a very delayed reaction.  Meaning there is a long pause before even the first element of a webpage loads, maybe 5+ seconds.   This affects every link on the site.  One such website is http://aa.usno.navy.mil/  and another is https://www.academicsuperstore.com/ So as you can imagine, browsing one of these websites is very painful.  What is very curious is when I switch back to my private block of IP addresses, everything works perfectly.  No slowdown,  Note: This happens on all computers, phones, tablets that connect thru the RG.

I previously had a /25 block which I had to give up because of some of the same issues, but much worst.  Many sites would simply not load,  Bestbuy.com for instance, was completely unsuable (would load after a long while and would only contain text). Couldn't login into league of legends client, and even the Blizzard Launcher (WOW, Overwatch) had issues.   And again, everything would work perfectly when I switched back to my private range.

I'm currently using a Pace 5286ac.  I  used the Add Additional Network funciton under Broadband->Link Configuration to add my router IP and subnet mask.  I am doling out IP address using the LAN->LAN IP Address Allocation function of the 5286ac RG.  Please let me know if this is not the proper way to use the Static block of IPs.

Additionally, when I go to speedtest.net using my public block, it shows my location in Kansas, but I'm actually in the Bay Area, CA.  Using the private ip does properly show me in my correct location.  I want to also point out, I've had a lot of problems with my installation.  Last month my Internet would crash every 1-4 hours and it took over a week to get resolved.  They changed my RG (nvg599) twice, and the Internet still crashed.  They changed out my ONT, and still had the same problem.  Finally changing the RG to a 5286ac fixed the issue.

Please help me.

Thanks

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

Hello @ATTCares

Below are two websites (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/ seems to be down right now) that I found another site causing the exact same issue.  Microsyspro has a huge delay in loading when using static IPs and doesn't actually fully load.  Very similar to the issue I had with BestBuy when I was using my block of /25.

By the way, not sure what you're talking about the inactive link to sales force.  I know the navy link is down right now, but it definitely was working when I posted, I'm sure it will be back up because this is a link is to the US Navel Observatory; I don't think they are going out of business anytime soon.  The other link to academicsuperstore is working just fine for me (well when not using statics).

Regards

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

@richarddiaz, the IP address you show for academicsuperstore.com [52.27.97.107] is assigned to Amazon. All of the 52. and 54. addresses you have listed do.  You might want to involve them in what is happening on routing within their network, as AT&T has carried the packets to the Amazon network (or none of the Amazon hosts would be responding to you).  Don't know if this is just AWS hosting, or if Amazon provides the purchasing feature for that site.

You didn't offer any supporting information about your .mil sites.

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

@JefferMC,

This is the second batch of static IP's that AT&T has provided me, and the second one that I'm having issues with.   With my previous static IP block, Best Buy wouldn't even load, neither would League of Legends, and I had issues with World of Warcraft as I mentioned in my earlier post.  Now with a new batch of static IP's I'm having somewhat similar issues; albeit not as worst as before.  Honestly, what would I even tell Amazon, or Megapath, or the DoD?  I'm having systemic routing problems accross multiple providers? These are all the IP address owners for these sites that I've referenced.  Honestly why would it even be my issue to resolve? AT&T should investigate, after all they are providing me the IP's.  I defintely don't have the time to deal with this kind of stuff.

By the way, it looks like the .mil site is back up so I will run some tracert in a bit of time, plus I'll see if I can upload a video to show the delay that I'm experiencing.

Also, just to add some clarity, my equipment configuration right now is Internet->5286AC->My devices.  I've tested with multiple devices, e.g. android phones & tablets (including an Fire tablet), iPhone 7, and Windows PCs.  They all experience the same issue as soon as I use an address from the static block.

Hello @ATTCares@JefferMC,

Here is a video demostrating the issue I'm experiencing -> https://youtu.be/YCZs3KnLpX4

Also, I've included the tracert for the aa.usno.navy.mil site.

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

In the case of this last traceroute,

63.148.110.14

is owned by QWEST, so the packet has exited AT&T's network at that point.  Sometimes AT&T uses perfectly valid IP addresses that, for one reason or another, cause issues where people configuring routing tables or security profiles have made incorrect assumptions about the validity of those addresses.  If I recall correctly those are usually on IP addresses starting with 99. and 172.

I'm not sure that @ATTDSLCare is getting the mentions from this thread.  I think that I would send them a Private Message with your account and contact information and a link to this thread to be sure they're seeing your posts.

I will say that it is somewhat unusual (though certainly not unheard of) for someone to be using public static addresses for outbound applications, especially browsing websites.  Normally people want public static for inbound applications, i.e. to make internal servers public.  Is there some reason you do need to public statics for outbound use?

Two footnotes: About the earlier message about invalid link to SalesForce, that was a message to ATTCares, not you.  Secondly when I say "people configuring...", I'm not referring to AT&T customers here, but to those people responsible for configuring security or routing at the other end.

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

@JefferMC,

I am using the statics for inbound traffic, but since my firewall is running one of those static IP's it is affecting my outbound traffic.  Yes I do have an IP address that starts 99.

I do understand routing, and that the issue could be with other providers, but I just need IPs that properly route.  I also understood what you meant by "people configruing".  The issues are not isolated just to Amazon, as you mentioned we have Qwest and others.  I don't have the time to try and troubshoot something that could be as complex as this to correct.  Just doing the ARIN searches is enough for me; I've have plenty of other of things on my todo list.

Anyway, I do want to thank you for the help so far.  I will send @ATTCares and @ATTDSLCare a message per your advise.

By the way, thanks for pointing out the issue with the Sales force link message.  I noticed they were replying to a thread with my subject line so I thought it was directed to me...I didn't notice the difference between @ATTCares and @ATTDSLCares.  Makes much more sense now.

Richard

Re: Major Issues with Static IP's on GigaPower

Depending on your needs, it may be possible to reconfigure your firewall and Gateway to avoid having your "normal" traffic go out with the public static.  You might want to discuss that option with ATTDSLCare/ATTU-verseCare, though right off the top of my head, I'm not sure how to do it without some fairly advanced tricks.
