VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

I recently signed up for the Fiber 100 plan. My bandwidth is great and I get about 90Mbps down and up. I have < 10ms pings to major sites on the internet (Google, etc.)

But basic web surfing is AWFUL. For example, a simple Google search will take 6-12 seconds to load the page. Almost any page load is like using dialup. Oddly, there's a huge pause where nothing happens, and then suddenly the whole page loads instantly.

If I am on google.com and typing interactively into the search box, I will get near-instant autocomplete results. But when I finally hit enter and do the search, the page load will take 6-12 seconds. I get similar problems on other sites. It's like establishing the initial connection of the HTTP request is the bottleneck. I thought it was maybe DNS, so I switched to 8.8.8.8 but that didn't make a difference.

I suspect the router itself is the problem, because the admin interface is similarly slow when I visit 192.168.1.254. I get the impression that the router hardware is overwhelmed in some way; insufficient memory, unable to handle connections or something like that.

Rebooting the router makes it better for about 6-12 hours, then it slows down again. After a reboot, page loads are not as fast as our previous service (Time Warner cable modem), but it's bearable for a few hours.

I have wired as well as a WiFi clients using the router; it affects both, but WiFi is much, much worse. I am using all the default settings from the initial installation (only thing I changed was the SSID). I just got the system update to 1.8.18 a few days ago (it came installed with 1.7.x), but unfortunately that did not help.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

Curious if this was resolved for the OP as I have been experiencing the exact same issue with my 300 MbPS fiber service. Two things have changed for me recently. My modem was replaced in December and I also recently reduced my service from 1 GbPS to 300 MbPS. This issue is also affecting my VOIP as I'm getting frequent dropped calls.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

Update: an AT&T representative contacted me in this forum and arranged to replace my router. This solved the problem immediately, and the router has not needed to be rebooted in the days since I installed it. The replacement seems to be an older model (5268AC) but definitely works better. It's too bad we can't use our own router equipment, but I'm happy that they addressed this quickly for me.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

Glad they got it resolved for you. I called AT&T last night and they are sending out a technician this weekend to take a look. I have a feeling I have a bad router as well. I checked last night and my admin interface (192.168.1.254) is also very slow and often completely times out.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

The Pace gateway is presently crippled by bad firmware if used it in DMZ+ mode with your own router. Connection drops to 50mbits. I had to switch my personal router to bridge mode for 3 weeks to regain my 1gbit connection. The Arris BGW is a way superior gateway and Passthru mode works like a charm. Now using my own router again, so I don’t understand the comment (can’t use my own router equipment.) The Pace was working beautifully until they went from v10 to v11 firmware.

I meant that it's not possible to plug the ONT directly into my own router, and bypass the BGW/5268AC entirely. I've read that that's not possible.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

@FriarGeorge

It's definitely possible. People are doing it two different ways, one with a fairly complex setup and one with just a "dumb" gigabit switch that's pretty simple to accomplish.  AT&T doesn't support it and their TOS seems to indicate that they don't allow it, so you'll need to Google around to find the instructions.

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

I would like to make this change as well. I’m having the same slow load times across all of my devices. This is a recent change and is negatively affecting web browsing.

thank you

Re: VERY slow page loads with Fiber 100/BGW210-700 router

We have all the exact same problems and are not super tech savvy with modems and routers. Can anyone recommend a simple solution, different modem perhaps? ATT has fixed it 4 times but after a day or 2 browsing or loading an app become impossible. The tech they sent out started berating me when I told him our wireless calling kept dropping.
