I'm seeing CPU growth on version 8.1.0.3002

by bstern@us.ibm.com » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:50 am

I am running the AT&T Network Client on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit OS. I installed version 8.1.0.3002. I'm seeing a steady increase in process utilization for the netclient.exe process until it starts consuming 100% of one CPU core. This occurs after running for just a few hours.

I've been searching online and can't find anything that mentions CPU growth with version 8.1.0.3002.

any ideas?

Have not seen this before. Is this with the IBM beta kit?

I downloaded the Net Client from the AT&T web site since I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

I'm not seeing anything like this (ibm), however I do see a regular 4-6% drain from netclient.exe even when no/little vpn traffic is flowing - I'm not convinced there's a good reason for this. I worry it could be as simple as the GUI update -- although it occurs even when app is minimized.

It would be useful to try to reduce this as it's just a waste of resource

I would be thrilled with 4 to 6 percent CPU utlization. Mine grows rapidly to the point where it consumes 1 entire CPU core.

I was able to solve the problem. After a lot of investigation and trial and error I figured out that there was some odd interaction between some Sierra Wireless drivers and the AT&T Net Client.

Here is what I did. I used a program called Process Explorer. I was able to see that NetClient was using SwiApiMux.exe. This seems to be related to Sierra Wireless. I compared my Windows 7 64-bit system with a machine that is very similar, but didn't have the Sierra Wireless drivers installed. I noticed that SwiApiMux.exe was NOT being used by NetClient.

Ultimately, I removed the Sierra Wireless drivers. I also went through the filesystem and removed all remnants of Sierra Wireless. Then I reinstalled AT&T Net Client and everything is working well.

Glad you solved your CPU issue.

However the 5-10% "leak" with no/low VPN activity and a minimize GUI is a seemingly unnecessary hit on system resource.

Can this be addressed?
Under windows is there a way of connecting without using the GUI?
