microcell tower

I have an older microcell tower.  I have a green light on the power and Ethernet. The GPS and signal will not stay on.  They will light up green and then the power button will flash red.  Is this a power cord issue, connection issue or do I need an external antenna for signal strength.  We do work in an MRI building with a very strong magnetic field.

Re: microcell tower

@GLIMMERMAN76 - thanks Chief.

@ComRad - Were you ever able to register/activate the MicroCell?

Check the ac adapter with a voltmeter. It should read 16VDC +/- 0.5 with no load. If not, replace it with a new adapter of the same rating.

A green power light means power is detected but it doesn't indicate that power is consistent or adequate. The green ethernet light just shows that you have a connection to your router.

The GPS light will flash green while it is performing a location check and then turn a solid green. That does not mean that location was verified. If it is the 3G light that is flashing red then location could not be verified. If it is the power light that is flashing red then power is not detected. If that's the case, then it is either the ac adapter that has gone bad or it is board failure in the MicroCell. If that's the case then there's nothing that can be done because they can't be repaired.

Being located in a building with a strong MRI field is not going to help so even if the adapter "passes" the voltage test you may have too much interference. You may also have an issue at work because of the way you connect to the internet. If your IT Department controls internet access you may not be able to pass thru the company firewalls because certain ports need to remain open 24x7 and if you don't have control over those ports, you're out of luck.

Keep in mind that the MicroCell is 3G only, and sales by AT&T of the MicroCell were discontinued at the end of 2017 because the MicroCell has reached its EOL. The service itself will be discontinued as soon as AT&T begins to transition away from their 3G network. What we, and AT&T recommend now is WiFi-C (WiFi Calling) if your phone is capable. But even that, in a work environment with a strong MRI field and no control over how you access the internet it may not work well either.
