microcell ethernet connection

Hi,

My DSL port is in my garage and I have it connected to a wireless router/switch. I would rather not have my microcell in my garage. I would rather have it in my living room where my computer is located. My computer is connected to the internet (DSL) with an internal wireless card. The ethernet port on my computer is not used. My question: can I connect the microcell to the unused ethernet port on my computer and will it work? If not, is my only option buying a wireless ethernet bridge?

thanks.

That would not be the best way.  First the computer would have to be on all the time for the MicroCell to work.  Also the computer would have to be set up for Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) which can lead to other issues.

Your choices are wireless or hard wiring your house.  You can get cables, connectors and wall plates very cheap.  I always use the following site for cables:

Can the computer be "sleeping" or must it be on? What are the disadvantages of ICS?

TIA.

You really don't want to do ICS. The computer has to always be on and there are a lot of potential problems.

I posted the following in another thread, but I'll paste it here since it can help you as well...

You can probably get away with hooking the microcell up to a wireless bridge. You can either get a dedicated bridge unit, or most wireless routers these days are also able to operate in bridge mode.

A bridge is essentially a wired extension of a wireless network. So your setup would be something like:

wireless network -> wireless bridge -> microcell

I think something like that may do the trick.

I went ahead and bought a D-Link wireless bridge and connect the Microcell to it. I have full 4 bars everywhere now in my house, including the backyard. Have'nt tried making any calls or received any calls yet, but I assume all is well with the 4 bars.

No, that's their access point. I got their Bridge.

The one thing I don't like about this product is that a flashing light indicates the bridge is connected to the wireless router. Usually a flashing light indicates a problem. No matter, I have it pointed so I don't see the flashing light. 🙂

I actually have the Microcell hooked up to an Airport extreme in WDS mode.

The main router (a Time Capsule) is in the other room.

It works flawlessly as long as you go through the power up procedure initially.

It also gets a GPS lock even though its no where near a window.
