AT&T Microcell... Signal Booster or Internet Cell Tower?

AT&T Microcell... Signal Booster or Internet Cell Tower?

I have read conflicting opinions on how AT&T's Microcell works. Some say it is a signal booster requiring at least 2 bars of service to work. Others say it is a mini cell tower that works by connecting to the AT&T network via DSL thus requiring no cell tower signal at all.

Can someone who knows for sure give me the straight skinny? Thanks

Re: AT&T Microcell... Signal Booster or Internet Cell Tower?

The MicroCell is actually a femtocell. It uses your internet connection and the closest cell tower to improve (boost) your cell phone in areas where the inside signal is weak, sporadic, or non-existent. It will work with a DSL or cable internet connection but not with a satellite ISP. You need to be in an area that is serviced by AT&T cell towers.
