For some reason my laptop can't connect to the wireless router via ethernet cable, so I grabbed my old desktop tower and monitor and connected the ethernet wire to the tower but for some reason it works hence why i'm on here online asking the question. Could the issue be that my laptop doesn't have a network card or something else, all can say is this desktop is circa 2002 and my laptop is a dell inspiron 5150 and runs XP.

Try to disble the wireless when you plug in with a cable. Sometimes the IP packets get confused which interface to use when both are enabled..

Since at&t tech support sucks and they will just read from a script.
Try this. Google "computer name and model" + drivers
Download latest drivers for LAN and Wireless card
