LOSING the ADBOT!

I've been experimenting with the Opera browser (great browser, BTW!) which has a 'blocked content' option in 'Tools', 'Advanced', 'Blocked Content' with stellar results. By right clicking on the ad, you can copy the server address from the 'Properties' tab, delete (backspace) the specific folder & file, then click 'Add' & all content from that ad server will be blocked. It's easy, & it's a permanent fix. For example: 1) Copy file location & paste it into the blocked content field - https://secure.img-cdn.mediaplex.com/0/7454/43775/31574_728x90_FCR_02.gif 2) Now delete the specific file info, leaving just the ad server name - https://secure.img-cdn.mediaplex.com 3) Now Click 'Add'. That's it, all content (i.e. ads) from this server will be blocked forever. Since the yahoo adbot uses a couple of different servers you'll have to do this a few times, but after blocking three servers I have a blank space below the yahoo header, a small text placeholder at the top of my navbar (to the right), & a blank white field at the bottom of my navbar. It's great, actually fewer ads than the BellSouth webmail (which were, granted, less intrusive & obnoxious). I am using the "Classic' view, & you can get the Opera browser here: http://www.opera.com/

Re: LOSING the ADBOT!

I've found it helps immensely to add an asterisk (wildcard) after the slash at the end of the ad server address. Here are several examples you can copy & paste into the 'Blocked Content' 'add' window: ______________________________http://ec.atdmt.com/* _____________________________________________________________________________ http://m1.2mdn.net/* _______________________________________________________________________ http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuite.net* _____________________________________________________________________________ http://aka-cdn-ns.adtechus.com/* _____________________________________________________________________________ http://speed.pointroll.com/* _____________________________________________________________________________ http://richmedia.yimg.com/* _____________________________________________________________________________ http://d.yimg.com/* ______________________________________________________________________________ I hope this helps. There are a few more ad servers but you can easily add them as they appear. Sorry about the formatting but it's the only way I could post a list.

Re: LOSING the ADBOT!

Once the adbot servers are blocked even yahoo is ad free! How cool is that?

Re: LOSING the ADBOT!

thanks LeOtis and David for those tips!

i don't have opera browser yet, but i'll definitely download it later and apply those ad blocks you recommended above.

btw, will the ad space show an empty white space once they are blocked?

Re: LOSING the ADBOT!

The AdBlock Plus extension works great for this on Firefox.

Re: LOSING the ADBOT!

Really glad to see folks editing the content they allow on their computers. We didn't have much (anything!!) to say about it on the front end, but at at least we don't have to view a barrage of mindless pap if we can help it. Any tips, settings, feedback , etc. will be greatly appreciated. And spread the word......
