How to find the external IP address of my gateway.

How to find the external IP address of my gateway.

I have ATT DSL with a 2Wire gateway and have a webcam configured in DMZplus mode.  I can access the webcam externally as long as I know its public IP address.  The problem is that the Gateway changes its public IP address every time its power cycled - and every few days even if it isn't power cycled.  When the address changes the webcam becomes inaccessible until I can get back inside the home network.

My question is:  is there any way to find what the public IP address is from outside the network?  Is it registered with a DNS under some name?

Re: How to find the external IP address of my gateway.

I am not sure if your current router supports is or not, but there is a free service called Dynamic DNS that many routers can be configured for.  When your IP address changes the router will re-register to Dynamic DNS with the new IP under a static DNS name that you pick (ex: my-network-name.dyndns.org).  This allows you to connect to your router/webcam/etc from the static DNS name that you registered and not have to worry about the IP address since it can constantly change.  You can read more about it here:

http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/dyndns.html

You will need to check with your router vendor on how to configure it (if supported).

The other option, that is not very attractive is to have someone behind your router pull up either of these webpages and read the current public IP to you:

http://www.myipaddress.com

http://www.ipchicken.com

I hope this helps.

I can't even ping my external IP Address provided by ATT - from outside my home - it is a Dyanamic IP Address. Is there anything specific i need to get configured to ping my external IP Address from outside - or something that ATT may have to do .
