Good-Bye AT&T (no PWP = no service)

This will probably be my last day with AT&T. When Worldnet is shut-down, my account will be deleted.
I originally choose AT&T Worldnet for the personal webpages (PWP).
[the vanity URL was the deciding feature. (http:\\sundreams.home.att.net)]
Since the new service has no webpage hosting, and no cost-effective option has been offered, it's a parting of the ways.
No PWP equals no service.

I can only imagine how frustrated you must be with us at this point, I appreciate the admirable restraint you exercised in your message. My sincere apologies for the time you have spent dealing with this issue. 

As per the update, the AT&T Worldnet Service started migrating accounts in February 2010 and the Worldnet services will be discontinued in April 2010.  Account suspensions will start on April 5th and continue through April 15th, at which point all Worldnet accounts will be suspended. 

 

Hence, we still have time to migrate the AT&T worldNet account to AT&T DSL/DIAL account.

 

I would like to explain that if you have High Speed Internet services, you can go to http://my.att.net/p, sign up for PWP, and host your website there for free.

Since AT&T doesn't play well with Cincinnati Bell, HSI is not available in my area (only dial-up).
When we moved to Ohio in July 2009, I could get CinciBell DSL, but not AT&T.
I wanted to stay with AT&T. I've been with ATT (wireless) for over 8 years and Worldnet for 5 years.
It feels like dial-up customers are being treated as second-class citizens, and AT&T is deliberately dealing us out of the game here.
i.e. PWP is provided for free to DSL/HSI customers, but not to their dial-up bretheren.
I ask AT&T to rethink this.
If I could get PWP on the new dialup service, I'd gladly migrate. No PWP leaves me with no reason to migrate (since all the hosting services I've checked into come with their own email)
- p.s. your link to info (http://help.yahoo.com/attwebhosting) didn't work. All I got was the general yahoo help page (nothing about webhosting).

Thanks for the info. Like many other long-term Worldnet PWP users, I have a number of other pages that link to my PWP site and most of my traffic comes from searches by Google and other search engines. Over a week ago, I duplicated my entire PWP site to another webhost. According to a Google help document at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=93633 , server-side 301 redirects are the best way to ensure that users and search engines are directed to a new site location. However, it states that setting up server-side 301 redirects requires access to the server's .htaccess file. Is it possible for Worldnet to set up 301 redirects to a new site, at least until service is discontinued? As described at http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Webmasters/thread?tid=51c0342542eb3a7b&hl=en , I have set up meta refreshes to my new site but I don't know whether or not that will redirect the engine searches once my Worldnet PWP site disappears. I do appreciate that Worldnet has at least continued service for a few days. Any other advice or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The customers who will be migrating from AT&T WorldNet to AT&T DIAL services, will be able to save their PWP (Personal Web Page) on their computer through the FTP link mentioned below:
 
AT&T DIAL customers can also use AT&T Web Hosting services. However, it would not be free service.
In order to get more information about the same, please contact AT&T Yahoo! Hosting at 1-866-722-9932 and follow the voice prompts. Press 3 for technical support and option 1 for the AT&T Yahoo! Hosting product and services.

Your email confirms why I have not migrated.
I saved my PWP over a month ago. It's currently up and running at http://home.fuse.net/sundreams/
You may notice it's now hosted by another provider, which will become my only provider
-that is, if ATT doesn't satisfactorily resolve the issue at-hand and convince me that migration will not result in loss of features.
As I said: I am disppointed that AT&T has failed to offer a cost-effective hosting solution for dialup customers.
I have already researched AT&T webhosting, and the best that has been offered is to have webhosting added to the dialup service. The company rep. said it would add $12/month (even though the website says $11.01), which would nearly double the cost of dialup service.
Other providers (like Cincinnati Bell) provide PWP as part of their basic dialup package (like Worldnet USED to do)
- and they do so at a price equal to AT&T's no-PWP dialup plan.

I offer AT&T a last chance to prove themselves to be a superior service. (or at least equivalent)
(hint: I'd LIKE to stay with AT&T for all my ISP needs, but the promised Dialup Internet Service fails to meet my needs.)
As I said in the subject, (no PWP equates to no service).
Meaning: a service without PWP is worthless to me.

Before I spend time trying to contact them, are you suggesting that they may be able to help me keep my current PWP url of http://home.att.net/~rdavis2 and/or do a server-side 301 redirect to my new site? As I mentioned, I have already copied my site to a new host and I only want to do a server-side 301 redirect from my old PWP site to my new site. This is so that the search engines (from whom I get most of my current traffic) become aware of the move and start directing search results to my new site. From my understanding, this 301 redirect requires a single line to be added to the server's .htaccess file.

I would be willing to continue to pay the $5 per month that I am currently paying to have this redirect done. This would also give me some time to notify sites that are linked to my site that it has moved. This would seem like a very simple option that AT&T could provide, at least for a few months.

In order to get information about server-side 301, it is recommended that you contact the new host services (through which you have hosted your PWP).

  • If you have hosted your PWP through AT&T web hosting services, then please, contact AT&T web hosting support (866-722-9932, open 24/7).
  • Otherwise, please contact services through which you have hosted your PWP.
  • Pre web hosting sites, please contact AT&T WorldNet Customer Care at 800-400-1447.

I think you misunderstand. As described in the Google help document at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=93633 that I referenced in my prior message, server-side 301 redirects must be on the old-site's server. That would be the one that is hosting the URL of http://home.att.net/~rdavis2 . The 301 redirects cause all references to that URL to be directed to the new site. More importantly, search engines will interpret this to mean that the site has permanently moved and will start directing results to the new site. Only the server of the old site (http://home.att.net/~rdavis2) has the ability and authority to do this.

By the way, I have been an AT&T High Speed Internet (DSL) customer for several years (and continue to be). Does that allow me any additional options? As I've said, my one goal is to keep the URL http://home.att.net/~rdavis2 or to get a server-side 301 installed for long enough to notify the search engines that the site has moved. Thanks.

The queries that you have about your PWP can only be answered by AT&T WorldNet Customer Care team. They will check the URL (http://home.att.net/~rdavis2 ) that you have question about and answer all the queries accordingly.

 

Hence, it is recommended that you contact AT&T WorldNet Customer Care department at 800-400-1447.

Penny, The link ftp://upload.worldnet.att.net brings this result from my browser: Safari can’t find the server. Safari can’t open the page “https://hcln0exbe01/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://upload.att.net/” because Safari can’t find the server “hcln0exbe01”.

I had some PWP at http://home.att.net/~indago/. From the address, one would think that it had nothing to do with WORLDNET. Since the WORLDNET has been dissolved, my WebPages have disappeared. (There were only three) Following the "transition" instructions, I created a new PWP WebPage site at http://my.att.net/p/PWP-indago. I have the old WebPages archived in my WebBuilder application, so I attempted to upload (publish) a page to my new PWP location and a window dropped down: FAILED TO PUBLISH. I made several attempts to upload and all failed. I had no problems like this with the previous PWP at http://home.att.net/~indago/. I saw Penny's link: ftp://upload.worldnet.att.net. I was hoping that this would help in uploading my new WebPages. I made a hit on it, and got from my Browser: Safari can’t find the server. Safari can’t open the page “https://hcln0exbe01/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://upload.att.net/” because Safari can’t find the server “hcln0exbe01”. It was said that the link was "fixed", and I made another hit on it and got my DOWNLOAD folder on my computer: nothing to do with UPLOADING. I still need some advice on UPLOADING to my new PWP WebSpace. I am hoping that someone can provide some credible answers.
