What is data transfer on monthly bill?

I have numerous line items labeled "data transfer".  What is this? On my sons bill "data" is labeled "data" and he is a teenager on the phone much more than I am.  Is there a difference?

Hi Hdog, we are here to shed a light on your bill and what the data transfer means!

A data transfer is your phone using cellular data. Also, iMessages and Advanced Messaging over the mobile network will show as data, not as text. Learn more about how wireless usage is billed to find out how you’re billed for your wireless data, talk, and text use.

Thank you for your response.  I remain confused though. On all other bills, when data was used it is just labeled "data".  This is actually labeled "data transfer". What is the reason for the way it is catagorized?

Great question, Hdog. The categories for usage are broad and are meant to provide a high-level view of the account's overall data usage.

Data or data transfer usage is how much data your phone uploads or downloads using mobile data. GPRR blocks international roaming capabilities.

Data is billed based on the amount of data sent or received through our network, in increments of kilobytes (KB), and not on a length of time it is used. Data usage can include:

  • Web browsing/searches
  • Instant messaging
  • Ringtones
  • Ringback Tones
  • Wallpapers
  • Games
  • Applications
  • Any other data transferred during a bill cycle.

The amount of data used is highly dependent on the type of content accessed. For example, streaming video and music typically use far more data than retrieving and reading email.

We hope this information helps. Let us know if you need any other assistance.
