US-based person calling a US person who is travelling overseas

Hello

I am a US citizen with a US phone number and will be travelling on an AT&T International Day Pass Plan to Portugal. If a US-based friend calls my regular US number (area code plus 7 digit number)  will they reach me in Portugal? If they can reach me without a country code, will they be charged for an international call, without knowing it?

I know there are other ways of being in contact, I just want to know the scenario above. Thank you.

They call your regular number.  Yes they can reach you.  No, there is no charge for them

Thank you! I have called AT&T Customer Service 4-5 times and they have told me both parties need an international plan. ? They also said that the person in the US would have to use the Portugal Country code, and then my US number, to reach me, which seems really odd. I think what you said is correct. Hoping I can get official confirmation from AT&T on this forum.

Both of those a just plain wrong. Callers in the US do not need an international plan and they do not need to dial the Portugal country code.

Hi Portugalquestion, we'd be happy to help you with your International Day Plan questions.

Since you both have U.S. numbers the country code would not be needed to reach you with the International Day Pass Plan. Both parties would need to have the plan to not get charged.

We hope this information helps, and thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.

Thank you, Jeff.  Sandblaster and Formerlyknownas, do you agree with Jeff's answer?  I'm confused why the US caller would be slapped with international charges if they called someone at a US number like normal, then later found out (when they got their bill!) the person was travelling abroad. Seems like AT&T would have a lot of people disputing international charges in this scenario. Why am I always confused by AT&T answers? :(

He is half right. He is wrong about both parties needing to have day pass but probably didn’t understand the question. He probably missed the part about the caller being in the US. I guess you can either choose to believe us or continue to get incorrect answers from ATT.

🤦🏼‍♀️

Argggg.

International day pass is required in order to avoid being charged $3 a minute while roaming outside of the United States.

Someone who is inside the United States does not need day pass and will not be charged extra for calling a United States phone number even if that phone number is on the other side of the planet.

I think Jeff thought both phones were roaming outside USA.

You gotta admit, AT&T is consistently inconsistent.  You can get multiple wrong answers

Thank you both!! I think you're both right and I'm proceeding accordingly because your answers make sense and are consistent.  Can't thank you enough!!!  If I may ask one last question to you--do you recommend International Day Pass or Passport?  I will be there for 2 months, using the phone daily--mainly just having it on to receive any calls.  Some data use for maps and occasional texting to the US.
