Unable to add a line due to DirectTV balance.

I waited on hold for over 30 minutes for a representative to tell me I can’t add a line to my AT&T account due to an unpaid DirectTV balance. I agreed to have an agent from DirectTV added to our call to discuss the matter, but was disconnected. I called DirectTV directly and was told I had a balance of over $900. When I signed up for DirectTV, I was quoted $45/month. My bill was more than double that. I chose to get rid of my DirectTV account. They charged me all kinds of fees for “breach of contract,” which I refused to pay because the bills were way more than what I was told they would be. This was 2 years ago and the balance has since been signed off to a collection agency. I do not understand why I can’t add a line to my AT&T account when I ultimately now “owe” the agency. I’ve been an AT&T customer for many, many years - since before they were AT&T. If I am unable to add a line to my account, I will be forced to take my business elsewhere.

Then you might as well go ahead and switch. ATT is likely not going to budge on that.

At&t sold the debt, but you still have a bad credit rating with at&t for a looooong time

@lizdance40 I understand your point. What I don’t understand is how I’ve paid my phone bill for years and years, but they won’t let me add a line when their in-store representative quoted me way less than what DirectTV charged me. You would think they would want to increase my phone bill when the debt isn’t theirs.

Haven't you ever loaned money to someone who promised to pay it back right away, but it took ages?
How quick are you to lend them money again?
FYI debts are sold at pennies in the dollar, so your name is mud.

Yes, I have been in the situation you stated above; however, I also understand there are many circumstances that could and do impact such scenarios. I made this forum for help and to see if anyone else has had a similar situation. Your comments are not helpful and simply degrading, so unless you have any insight into how I resolve this issue, please do not comment further.

The intent of the forum is to get help and you’re not helpful. I looked at your profile and it appears you make it a point to be less than helpful on many forums. It’s unfortunate that you have such a negative attitude and rude comments. I will not be responding to any further responses.

Im having the same issue however, they are telling me I have an unpaid Uverse internet account when I have NEVER had uverse, I cant even get it at my house. So now they are telling me I have to go through the fraud department to get it resolved before adding a line. However the guy in the store said I could just pay the fraud and be done with it. Im not paying $351.01 for something Ive never had! And this was back in 2018-2020. Ive gotten new lines since then but now for some reason I cannot. Super frustrating.
