Partial Payment on Installment Plan Not Allowed

AT&T doesn't allow you to make a partial payment on your iPhone installment plan. It only allows you to pay off the entire amount. I would love to pay off the plan early, but don't have the money to pay it in full. I can't for the life of me understand why this is AT&T's policy, as it's not customer-friendly.
