Authorized retailers will often automatically pad their stats by adding insurance and next up. The $5 fee allows you to upgrade when you have paid 50% of your phone off (15 months) . Without that see you must pay 100% of your phone off before you are allowed to upgrade (30 months, unless you pay off sooner)

This forum is not customer support. No one here has access to your account to answer. You obviously got signed up for it when you upgraded. We’ve seen other customers complain about getting that added when they didn’t request it. It is easily removed. You can remove online or by calling.

Oh, I know this isn't customer support.... I just figured other folks would have insights as to how or why one gets hooked into that extra charge. I literally looked everywhere on the ATT site and cannot find one mention of what it really is or why the charge. Was just hoping to gain some insight before talking blindly to customer support. I've often found that if ya don't know what you're even talking about, then ya just get further screwed by their "help." lol

Ok, thank you very much! Those kind of hidden charges really get my goat. There was no need for nor discussion about that "little upgrade" opp and charge when I got the phone... And they likely know darn well that when someone has already bought the top of the line, they will have absolutely no need or interest in upgrading in a just over a year, and in fact, it is highly unlikely that any such upgrade would even exist in that short amount of time. Meanwhile, they would have just snagged $75 for those 15 months, and another truly even more useless $75 the next 15 months! Next-Up, my (Edited per community guidelines)! Arghhhh

That's how I feel about it. There's no way I'm going to pay $75 just for the right to upgrade my phone early. But T-Mobile introduced this idea several years ago, people actually buy into it. And surprising as it is, people at AT&T wanted to. It can be removed, but not added later. So retailers are instructed to add it, unless you know about it, and tell them not to do so.

I ordered the phone at an AT&T retailer and the guy automatically added the $5 a month charge WITHOUT TELLING ME. I noticed this NextUp charge on my statement and called AT&T customer service to remove it. It took over 3 billing cycles to clear this scam off my account. AT&T refused to offer any adjustment to the bill either. AT&T retail store is a scam.

@CODYL
You could have removed it yourself online.
Next up can be removed after the fact, but not added. Sales people err on the side of caution
