Next Plan: Unlock iPhone Without Paying Full Remaining Balance Immediately?

I bought an iPhone 6s via the AT&T Next plan, but now I'm moving abroad and need to switch carriers. I want to unlock the phone and continue paying my monthly installments to AT&T, but they're saying they won't unlock it until I pay off the full remaining balance for the phone ($500).

Is there any clever way to unlock my device, cancel my line, and continue paying my monthly installments for the phone to AT&T?

My line is on a family/group shared plan, we're keeping group shared plan (for my mom and sister). I know they might unlock if I keep my line, but I don't want to pay $20/mo. for a line I'm not using. Does anyone know of any other solutions to get my device unlocked? Open to anything. Thanks so much!

No, there is no way to accomplish what you want. Your Next plan is tied to your line. If you cancel the line, the balance of what is owed for the phone is due. Additionally, ATT will not unlock the phone until it is paid for. To ensure it is unlocked before you move, you need to pay off the phone and get it unlocked before you cancel the line. Waiting until after you cancel to pay off the phone will only delay the unlock.

@sdavids

You aren’t going to get any other answer (not a correct one) so I’m marking it as such.

@gmtrjt  It’s on your bill.

Question... If I have a finance iPhone X and try to get the phone unlock through at&t unlocking website, would they approve my unlocking even if I still have a balance on the iPhone? Like finance balance? Thanks

No.  All financial obligations must be completed to unlock through the portal.
