Monthly charges increased in error after automated plan change promised at no additional cost

On Tuesday, June 16, 2020, I received a text message from AT&T at 7535 stating:

AT&T Free Msg: Great news! As a valued AT&T Signature customer, your plan has been upgraded to Unlimited Elite at no additional cost. Your new plan has free HBO Max, 30GB of mobile hotspot per line, HD streaming and more. Learn more at att.com/signatureextratoelite

My previous plan was AT&T Unlimited Extra(SM) at $80.00/month; now it is AT&T Unlimited Elite(SM) at $100.00/month. I don't consider an additional $20.00/month "no additional cost." How do I dispute this?

Hello @bretrodgers!

Let's look into that wireless plan upgrade for you. It's possible to reduce the amount you pay (a $10/mo. discount per phone line) by signing up on AutoPay / Paperless Billing (AP/PB).

If, prior to the change, you already signed for AP/PB sign in to your AT&T account and make sure you're still subscribed.

Let us know how this worked for you.

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I am talking about. Please re-read the original post. Per the link from the AT&T message: “Best yet, your monthly price won’t change and your discounts per line remain the same as long as you remain on the plan.”

The FCC has a definition for this practice of fraudulently adding unauthorized charges to a customers phone bill: cramming. And it’s illegal. The rate plan was changed without my authorization and the price was increased without my authorization.

A case is now on file with the FCC and they have already sent to AT&T for resolution.

I wanted to share that I have been dealing with this same error since June.  Every month I have to call and s[end at least an hour explaining the situation while I am drilled by a customer service agent like I am on trial.  Eventually they manually credit my account.  It has been a nightmare.  Each time they promise to fix it and they don't. I have no issues with AT&t, except this.  February 2021 and still being overcharge the past 7 month is unacceptable.
