Mobile Share Value Plans Questions and Discussion

Beware.. The $160 per month plan for 4 smart phones with ATT is pretty shadey. They don't tell you that you are required to pay for 4 smart phones at full retail price. Maybe that small detail is buried somewhere in the fine print when the adds on TV play, but make sure you know exactly what you are paying for before jumping onto this.... It's very, very tricky.

Right now I'm paying $15 per line right now. So go from $15 per line to $40 if you upgrade.

Their new shared data plan is such a big savings IF you don't upgrade or pay full price for your new phone. I wasn't inform of this when the att rep that was helping me. He told me everything would be the same when you sign the 2 years contract. He did not tell me it would increase from $15 to $40 per line. On the old plan, you would pay cost of phone/tax plus activation fee and be on your way. Now on the shared data plan, you pay cost of phone/tax plus activation fee plus an increase of $25 per line per upgrade. I was tricked into switching to the shared data plan because I had 3 out of 5 lines that had unlimited data plan. I am very unhappy and I am deciding to move to Tmobile. I want my account reverse back to before or else I'm leaving.

@cong - I'm so sorry to hear this! How long ago did you upgrade? If you are still within the 14 day period, you can definitely return those phones and your plan might be switched back if you explain to the store rep or call into Customer Care, but no guarantees!

@Rayosun I didn't upgrade. I just switched plan. I switched about a month and half ago? I just found out about the upgrade rule. From what the rep told me, I would save with the shared data plan and when I sign 2 years for my upgrade, it would be the same terms and nothing would change in price. Absolutely not true!

@cong - how much were you paying previously? How many lines are under contract? How much data is consumed a month? It's also worth mentioning that the activation fee would not be charged if you changed your plan. There is also no upgrade fee if you upgrade via AT&T Next. However please give some details such as the above so a solution can be reached 😃

Sure. Before this mess, I owned 6 lines. I had 2 separate accounts under one bill. Let's talk about account 1 which had 5 lines (the max). I had all iPhones, 3 out of 5 had unlimited data and other 2 had 3GB limit. I paid give or take $275 a month. Yes that's 700 minutes but att gave me unlimited mobile to mobile since I had all the features like unlimited text ect... So giving $275 a month for 5 lines, that would be roughly $55 per line. If we were to eligible for 2 years upgrade, well you know the cost. Keep in mind, I had unlimited data plan for 3 phones, those phones did use some data but never was pass 3GB. Some were close but never exceeded. Now on the new shared data, it seems like we are using more than we had.

I am ready to go somewhere else also, I had two smartphone lines and one flip phone line and was talked into giving up the flip phone for a smartphone with a two year agreement. The ATT employee told me $145.00 a month for up to 4 smartphone lines and thats all I would have to pay. I asked her three times and she promised thats it.  WHAT A BIG FAT LIE. I figured what the hey so I let my son get a smartphone giving us the 4 she told me we were allowed and my bill would be $145. I was thinking this is great what ATT is doing. Well my bill is now $242.00 a month. $100 dollars more than she promised me. I called in and they told me on the phone oh well I should read all the fine print. She said you didn't really think you were getting those $700 dollar phones for $199 now did you. We have to charge you $40 dollars a month for those two years so we get our money back, nothings free. I said then why the heck should I sign a two year contract if I gotta pay for the stupid phone full price anyway. She said it sucks but thats how ATT is doing their customers now. Its wrong, its so wrong.

@cong - Great, thanks for that!! How much are you paying now compared to the old plan? How much data is being consumed? What is your current plan? I can try to find a plan that can suit your needs since you stated your lines have always used less than 3GB/monthly.

@cornettrc - The community is glad to assist you in whatever we can, however. However, how long has it been since the upgrade? Has it been more than 14 days? You can return the devices if you wish and your upgrade eligibility would be restored. Keep in mind that all carriers are doing this in one way or another, especially Verizon and T-Mobile. Changing carriers would mean new phones usually and thus the same problem. 😛

Right now I'm paying $228 total after tax and company discount for 6 lines. All iPhones and on 15gb. Conserving data plan isn't the problem. The problem is the upgrade issue. We are paying $15 a line plus $130 for the 15gb. We like to upgrade every 2 years when new iPhone comes out and we like to OWN the phone after paying all that money. On the new shared data plan, if we choose the 2 years contract, we would pay cost of phone ($200 plus tax) and $40 activation plus increase monthly payment to $40 from $15. So if everyone in my account upgrades, we would all have to pay $240+ each for the phone and pay $375 or more each month for 2 years.
