Is there any way I can get my IPhone 13 pro max unlocked?

I am under my mothers ATT account and when she upgraded her phone and sent it back the post office lost it so they're trying to make her charge her for it.
The post office wouldn't give any information about the package after she sent it because she only had the confirmation number. She refused to pay it so now our service is cut off and my IPhone is still locked because it wasn't paid off under the installment plan. Is there any way I could pay off the phone myself and get myself a new carrier? I'm sorry if I set topic and or category incorrectly.

If your mom is the account holder and the phone was on her account then only she can pay it off. If she doesn’t pay it off then what is owed could be sent to Collections which will be another problem. The phone will eventually be blacklisted and you won’t be able to use it on any carrier.

Would trading in this phone to a new carrier be something I shouldn't do? I don't want any trouble I just can't buy a new phone at the moment.

Hello, @MuddleOfPud! We can answer your question about unlocking device.

Thank you to the ACE for their helpful information.

We recommend the account holder reaching out to us for further assistance with being billed for the lost device.

In order for a device to be unlocked/traded, you would need to meet all the device unlock requirements, which includes the device being paid off.

We hope this information was helpful, and please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums!

She needs to pay off what is owed. Otherwise it will be sent to Collections. And once it's sent to a Collection Agency, AT&T washes its hands and you have to deal with the Collection Agency, which could affect her credit rating down the road. As I said, the phone will eventually be blacklisted so it won't be able to be used with any carrier, and if you try to use it for a trade-in, my guess is that the carrier will notice that the phone is locked due to an unpaid balance and they won't accept it. Either way, the unpaid balance will go to Collections which is what you/she want to avoid. She owes AT&T money, plain and simple.
