How can I keep a number active at the lowest cost
I am moving abroad for 5-6 months and want to keep my phone number active for when I return. What is the most economical way of doing this please?

The most economical way would be to port your number to google voice. You can port it back when you return. The next most economical way would be to move your line to prepaid, put it on a pay per use plan and deposit $100 on your account. A $100 is good for a year and will still be there to use when you return.
