Can I unlock a phone within 15 days of upgrading and port-out?

Hi All,

I recently upgraded my 2 phones from iphone 5 to iphone 6 by extending my contract for 2 years. I have been with ATT for 4 years. One iphone 6 was upgraded 20 days ago, the another one was upgraded 7 days ago.

If I now port these 2 numbers to another carrier, will I got ETF charged for both phones? If I pay them immediately, could I request them unlocked as soon as possible? Do I need to wait for 60 days?

Thanks!

If you are in a contract and you port out, those lines ported out will be cancelled and the early termination fee will be billed on your next bill. The fee has to bill as well as be paid before you are able to unlock the phones.

Thanks, but I heard about 2 things:

  • if you cancel within 14 days of new activation, you don't got to keep the phone
  • you have to wait for 60 days before you can request unlock

I don't know if the either apply to me.

Thanks!

Thats correct. You have 14 days to return the phone if you choose to then your original contract is reset to where it previously was. Are you trying to keep the phones or no?

I want to keep the 2 iphone 6. The main reason is to get them unlocked so I can use them overseas for 1 month. I talked to ATT and they cannot unlock them for me. The only way I can think of is to port them out to T-mobile and pay the ETF for both lines. I also know that the final bill is not prorated, so I have to do that before Dec-6. But then one of the iphone 6 is still within 14 days of activations. And I also heard about the 60 days rule of unlock and wonder if it applies to me.

I would only wish ATT can just unlock the phones and I don't need to go through these hassle.

Sigh...

You will have to wait until you are outside of the 14 days to unlock that one. If you port out and etf is billed and paid you are able to unlock the phones.

Do you still have the iPhone 5's? Rather than going through the whole ETF mess, you could get them unlocked and use them while overseas.

My plan is to give the iphone 5 to my relatives during the trip 😞

Thanks, I will let everyone how this will turn out finger crossed. Of course, if there are anyone with divine power here in the community who can help me unlock, I don't need to do all these.

I just port my numbers away from ATT (Dec-4). My billing cycle ends Dec-6. When would I be expecting my final bill via snail mail?

I have no idea how long it will take. I suggest you pay online or by phone. AT&T is not required to unlock your phone, but may do it anyway.

It would have been cheaper to sign up for the $5.00 international plan and pay the charges, or buy a throwaway phone when you land at your destination. Instead you will have a bill for about $2,000 for the phones and service.
